Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I'd like to teach the world to sing..." are lyrics from a song which was used in an advertising campaign for what brand of soft drink?

Answer: Coca-Cola

The song was called "I'd like to buy the world a Coke". The advertisement was released in 1971 but somehow I remember it well even though I was not born until 1972. The song in question was reintroduced in an ad during the 1990 Super Bowl game.
2. Which of the following people was not a spokesperson for a Coca-Cola product?

Answer: Marilyn Monroe

Petula, Nancy and Connie all helped to promote Coca-Cola in the sixties.
3. In the USA, if you go to KFC, A&W or Taco Bell, which group of soft drinks will you be served?

Answer: Pepsi

Pepsi spun off their restaurant business in 1997 and called it "Tricon". In 2002 Tricon became "YUM! Brands" and it is now the parent company Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, KFC, A&W and Long John Silver's. When combined, these organizations make up the world's largest restaurant group.

Please note - outside the USA, different drinks may be available!
4. Do you remember Fido Dido? What soft drink did he promote?

Answer: 7-Up

Created on a cocktail napkin in 1985, this spiky-haired cartoon character (seven hairs to be exact) quickly became a major icon in the soft drink business. 2003 saw the revival of "The King of Cool" in India to market PEPSICO's clear thirst quencher once again.
5. Which soft drink boasted "just one calorie" in their ad campaign?

Answer: Pepsi One

In 1998, PEPSICO introduced Pepsi One, highlighting the feature of only one calorie, which Pepsi achieved by replacing the sugar with aspartame and Acesulfame potassium (also known as Ace K).
6. Max Headroom was the spokesperson for Coca-Cola during the "Catch the wave! Coke" campaign to promote New Coke. With what musical group did Max sing "Paranoimia"?

Answer: The Art of Noise

Although Max looked like a computer generated entity, technology did not exist at that time - he was real. Max was "born" in 1985 on British television, introducing music videos on the "The Max Talking Headroom Show". "The Art of Noise" was founded in 1983 by Trevor Horn and quickly found success on the urban and alternative dance charts.
7. I'm one; he's one; she's one; we're one. What is everybody?

Answer: A pepper

Who hasn't loved Dr. Pepper at one point in their lives? Dr. Pepper was created in Waco, Texas, in 1885, one year prior to the creation of Coke making Dr. Pepper the world's oldest (currently used) soft drink. The town of Dublin, Texas, renames itself "Dr. Pepper" for one week each June.
8. Which of these actresses could be accredited for inventing product placement - particularly with the Pepsi brand?

Answer: Joan Crawford

When Joan Crawford was named to the Pepsi board of directors in 1959 she managed to get the Pepsi image brought on to the set of some of her last few feature films including: "The Caretakers", "The Story of Esther Costello" and "Trog".
9. "The stars will always shine, the birds will always sing..." are lyrics from one of my all time favourite jingles. What brand of soft drink was this song written for?

Answer: Coca-Cola

1993 gave us the amazingly catchy tune "Always Coca-Cola", which lasted six years; three more than originally projected. The television commercial featured a plethora of colorful images changing several times per second and was one of few advertisements to run for one full minute. Like Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video in the eighties, this commercial was (for me) a major reason for watching television in the (early) nineties.
10. Which soft drink did tennis legend Andre Agassi promote?

Answer: Mountain Dew

Andre dangled from a helicopter in 1994 for a Mountain Dew advertisement. 1994 was a busy year for Andre. He became the first unseeded player to win the U.S. Open since 1966, he co-launched the first All Star Café in New York City and played opposite Pete Sampras in an ad for Nike.
