Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where in Seattle is the Science Fiction Museum located?

Answer: At the base of the Space Needle

It's difficult to miss the Space Needle, so the Museum is easy to find. It is located at 325 5th Avenue North, in the futuristic, brightly colored Frank Gehry building and there is a monorail terminal right beside it.
2. Which other museum does the Science Fiction Museum share its location with?

Answer: Experience Music Project

The Experience Music Project (EMP) is in the same building so, if your tastes run to music as well as science fiction, plan at least a day's visit to the site. The music collection takes you on a journey through popular music history and includes memorabilia, fan club materials, song sheets, instruments and lots of multimedia and hands-on exhibits.
3. When was the Science Fiction Museum first opened in Seattle?

Answer: 2004

The museum was opened in summer 2004. At the time, a number of news reports mistakenly billed the venture as the world's first science fiction museum but Forrest J Ackerman's Ackermansion and Museum in Los Angeles got there first.
4. The Museum incorporates the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, but this particular exhibit used to be housed in another US state: which one?

Answer: Kansas

The exhibit was originally located in the Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas. New individuals are inducted into the Hall of Fame, based on their contributions to the genre, each year.
5. Which Seattle-based entrepreneur was the co-founder of the Science Fiction Museum together with Jody Patton?

Answer: Paul Allen

The co-founder of Microsoft had a hand in this Museum as well as the Experience Music Project it shares the building with. He donated his Jimi Hendrix memorabilia, the largest private collection in the world, to the Music Project.

Jerry Baldwin was a co-founder of Starbucks and Jeff Bezos founded Amazon.
6. Which of the following is not a themed area within the Science Fiction museum?

Answer: Alien Invasions

The main areas are zoned into broad themes although there is a wide variety to see within each of them.

Homeworld includes the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, lots of fanzine materials and some amazing costumes. Some of these are originals from TV series like Star Trek. There are also costumes made by fans for SciFi conventions, including a Stormtrooper costume that looks like it just walked off the Star Wars set. There are also some original Star Trek scripts with hand-written script notes made by the actors.

Fantastic Voyages has an armory of weapons used in TV series and movies, plus a variety of space suits and an interactive exhibit with spaceships from Science Fiction history together with a database of information on each one. They range from HG Wells' Time Machine through the Jetsons to Star Wars.

Brave New Worlds gives glimpses into the alternative worlds created in Planet of the Apes, Bladerunner and of course, Brave New World, among others.

The final section is Them! which focuses on alien and robotic lifeforms, including the power loader used by Sigourney Weaver in Aliens to fight off the Alien Queen, a variety of androids and robots, and other interesting exhibits on the current search processes for extraterrestrial life.
7. Which of the following exhibits will you not find in the Science Fiction Museum?

Answer: Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia

Sorry, you have to travel to Washington DC and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum for the Apollo module. All the others have found a new home at the Science Fiction Museum.
8. What significant change to the Hall of Fame induction process took place in 2005?

Answer: It was expanded to include all media contributors, not just authors

Prior to 2005, only authors were included but after the change artists, directors and others have become eligible. All are judged to have made outstanding contributions to the world of science fiction. As a result the current members include Arthur C. Clarke, Ursula le Guin, H.G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

The nomination process is for Science Fiction Museum members only and a panel of science fiction award winners make the final decision as to who gets in. Some of the members have made contributions to the Museum but inclusion in the Hall of Fame is the only reward.
9. How many members are inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame each year?

Answer: Four

Since 1996, the Hall of Fame has inducted four new members each year. There is a wonderful multi-media exhibit, which gives biographical details of each of the Hall of Fame members so you can find out about their contributions for yourself and also hear interviews with some of them. Then you can search for exhibits and artefacts related to their work in the rest of the museum.
10. Which of the following is a 2007 inductee into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame?

Answer: Gene Roddenberry

To the delight of Trekkies everywhere, the creator of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007. He shared the honour with Ridley Scott, the director of Alien and Blade Runner; Gene Wolfe, author of the Book of the New Sun; and Ed Emshwiller, an award winning science fiction artist. Walking through the museum it's interesting to note that some of the more unfamiliar names are responsible for the most familiar book covers and images. The final section of the museum also houses a small art exhibition of book and magazine covers.

The other choices are all members of the Hall of Fame. Frank Herbert and George Lucas were inducted in 2006, joining Michael Moorcock, who had been inducted in 2002.
