Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ok, if an older person were to unexpectedly give you a present or gift, what would you say? (Keep in mind that you're a polite person! :) )

Answer: Tapadh leibh

Tapadh leat: thanks :) But you can't say that to old people in this language. Slainte mhath: cheers :) You're not drinking right now. An t-uisge: the rain ... Not much use here eh?
2. Which day of the week follows Diluain (Not too hard this ... guessable)?

Answer: Dimairt

Dihaoine, Disathairne, Didomhnaich are Friday Saturday Sunday and as I'm sure you well know, Tuesday (Dimairt) follows Monday (Diluain). Looks a bit like French, doesn't it?
3. The expression used when you're in a pub, roughly meaning 'cheers!' (literally: 'good health!' ... This is a giveaway! Slainte_____.

Answer: mhath

Slainte mhath ... Cheers, my username and a folk band from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
4. Which of these countries is the farthest North (hint: they're all in Europe)?

Answer: Innis Tile

Innis Tile is Iceland! Eadailt: Italy, Eirinn: Ireland, Alba: Scotland. You have to know *some* geography for this one, but wasn't too cruel. I hope.
5. Which of these names is 'Malcolm' in Gaelic?

Answer: Calum

Yup, you got it. Calum means Calum AND Malcolm :) Handy isn't it, this two-in-one. Domhnall, Eosaph, Tormod are Donald, Joseph and Norman
6. What does the name 'Ruairidh' (Roderick, Rory or Roddy in English) literally mean?

Answer: Reddish-brown

Norseman: Fionnghal (Fingal). Unique choice: Aonghas (Angus). Bent nose (yes, *not* a typo, it really does mean this): Camran (Cameron?)
7. What does the song title 'Oran' mean (hint: Gaelic rock song by Scots band Runrig, who are amazing :) )?

Answer: Song

Yup the song called Song...There is a song called 'Ard' by Runrig which means high. 'Headlights' and 'Lifeline' are just English songs by Runrig :).
8. Which of these is an (edible) food?

Answer: Im

'Im' interestingly enough is butter ... Bata: boat (I don't eat those...). Sgith: tired. Samach: quiet :).
9. Complete the name of the following drink. (I'm not going to tell you what they call it in English but it literally means 'water of life'): uisge____.

Answer: beatha

If you haven't already figured it out I'll put you out of your misery ... The drink is ... nah, changed my mind, not telling :) Oh ok, since I'm in a good mood, it's whisky.
10. If you come from England, what's the answer to the following question: 'De co as a tha thu?'

Answer: Tha mi a sassan

Hmm ... Haven't you ever heard the Scots insult the Sassanach? Although strictly speaking it means "Saxon" (Sassan being "land of the Saxons), it is now used as a disparaging term for an English person in general. Gabhaibh mo leisgul: excuse me (this would be acceptable too {;)} ) Uamhasach fhein math: awfully good (certainly not acceptable!!!). 'S caomh leam a 'ghoid: I like stealing (a bit random maybe ... *head drifts off into clouds*).
