Answer: William Wooldridge

William Woolridge was appointed as the SMA on July 11, 1966 and served in that position until August 1968. He was assigned to 1st Infantry Division and participated in the D-Day landings and the Battle of the Bulge campaigns. He was also appointed as the 1st Infantry Division sergeant major and was then deployed to Vietnam.

Answer: Kenneth Preston

SMA Preston assumed duties on Jan 15, 04. SMA Preston served as the CSM for Combined Joint Task Force 7 that served in Baghdad.
3. The first African-American Sergeant Major of the Army was which of the following?

Answer: Gene McKinney

SMA McKinney was sworn in on July 1, 1995 and he was the 10th SMA, and first (and only, as of 2004) African-American to assume the position. SMA McKinney served one tour in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Unfortunately he will be most remembered for the sexual harassment charges that were brought against him and his administrative removal from his position.

SMA Morrell was the 7th SMA. He served three tours in the Republic of Vietnam and two tours in Panama. 1/75th Ranger Battalion was among many of his assignements. SMA Gates was the 8th SMA. He served two tours in Vietnam and a tour in the Republic of Korea.

SMA Tilley was the 12th SMA. The black beret is just one of many things he did while serving as SMA.

SMA Bainbridge was the 5th SMA. In 1965 he was sent to Vietnam with the 1st Battle Group, 28th Infantry (1st Battalion, 28th Infantry). SMA Bainbridge also served as the CSM of the Infantry Training Center and 1st Army.

SMA Hall was the 11th SMA. He was also inducted into the Sergeant Morales Club and the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club. SMA Hall served as an instructor at the Sergeants Major Academy after graduating from that same academy.

SMA Dunaway was the 2nd SMA. He was sworn in on Sept 1, 1968.
