Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are quite a few hotels constructed almost entirely of glass. All of these are made mostly of glass EXCEPT which one?

Answer: Happy Nomads Village, Kyrgyzstan

Happy Nomads Village gives guests the opportunity to stay in traditional style yurts. The other three are all constructed largely of glass in order to give guests amazing views. PurePods in New Zealand are very remote and private which is important because all the walls are made of glass, including the shower and toilet walls.

The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort offers rustic log cabins, reindeer, Santa's house and glass igloos for a stunning view of the Northern lights. Skylodge Adventure Suites are transparent hanging bedrooms in the Sacred Valley of Cuzco. To get to your suite, you need to climb or hike (recommendation is to wear pants, not shorts) and to leave, you either rappel or zipline back down the mountain.
2. A Buddhist temple in Sisaket Province, Thailand is made of this unlikely material, can you name it?

Answer: Beer bottles

The Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew is also known as The Temple of A Million Bottles and is constructed of empty beer bottles, specifically green Heineken and brown Chang beer bottles. The bottle caps are used to make mosaics. Bottle collection started in 1984 and construction of the main temple took two years to complete, by 2009, twenty buildings had been completed. What an environmentally friendly way to use old beer bottles!
3. I guess parents got tired of stepping on pieces of this house in Dorking, England that ended up being demolished. What do you think it was made of?

Answer: Lego

James May built a two-storey Lego house complete with a working toilet, a bed and a shower. He used over 3.3 million Lego pieces and one thousand volunteers to construct the house that was situated on a vineyard. The vineyard wanted their land back and so the house was demolished and the bricks donated to charity. May tried to find a buyer for the house and looked at having the house moved to Legoland however the costs were too high and ultimately, no-one was that interested in it.
4. Since this country is the worlds largest producer of cork, it seems fitting that their pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo was made entirely of cork. Which country are we talking about?

Answer: Portugal

The Portugal Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010 was made of black agglomerated cork. The building was designed by Carlos Coutu and awarded the Design Award for pavilions less than two thousand square feet in size. Cork was chosen as the construction material because it is a national product that is ecologically and environmentally friendly.
5. There is no heating or plumbing at this hotel that has to be rebuilt every year but there is a bar and a chapel. The material is in the name of the hotel that was the first of its kind in the world. What is it called?

Answer: Icehotel

Icehotel is located in the village of Jukkasjärvi in northern Sweden and is the first ice hotel constructed in the world. Every year, ice and snow are taken from the nearby Torne River and the hotel is rebuilt, being available for guests from December to April. Room temperatures hover around −5 °C (23 °F) and there is no plumbing or heating.

However, artists are invited to design different rooms so that no two rooms are the same. Everything, including the beds are made of ice and the chapel is very popular with couples getting married.
6. This soundproofing material was used to cover the exterior of The Soundhouse, a music studio built for the University of Sheffield. What material was used?

Answer: Rubber

The Soundhouse is a three storey music studio designed for the University of Sheffield and covered in black rubber quilt, each piece weighing half a ton. The sheets were affixed to the building with stainless steel studs, giving the outside of the building a quilted effect.

The material is perfect for soundproofing the multiple practice rooms and six music studios for student use. Research into acousmatic sound is conducted at the building, meaning sound that is heard without the cause of the sound being seen, and concerts in the dark are often held there so that the audience can fully engage in the experience of listening.
7. Call it an art museum or a clubhouse but an Austin, Texas man constructed this place out of everyone else's castoffs. What's the name of this adored construction?

Answer: Cathedral of Junk

Vince Hannemann started collecting junk when he was in his twenties, building his Cathedral and adding bits and pieces to it over time. It stands in his backyard and can apparently withstand big Texas storms. It's constructed with items such as lawnmowers, car bumpers, bicycle parts, kitchen utensils and so much more.

It has multiple levels, passageways, stairs and even a Throne Room. It's one of those structures that looks bigger on the inside.
8. The Great Mosque of Djenné, Mali is made with sun-baked earth bricks, sand and earth based mortar, and plaster. The original construction date is unknown but the current structure was completed in what year?

Answer: 1907

Because of the erosion and weather damage that takes place with the materials used in the construction of this mosque, the entire community helps to maintain it in an annual festival. The festival is a celebration that includes food and drink but the main reason is to repair any damage that has occurred to the walls. Plaster is prepared in advance of the festival and then used to cover any cracks and damage. Everyone in the community has a part to play, the men climb up and down the ladders to make the repairs, women bring water to the working men and elders watch from a place of honour in the square (as they have participated in the festival numerous times throughout their lives).
9. Kinkaku-ji is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan that translates to what phrase that describes what it's made of?

Answer: The Golden Pavilion

The Golden Pavilion dates back to 1397 when it was purchased by a wealthy and powerful family and used as a villa. During the Onin War from 1467-1477 all of the buildings in the complex except the pavilion were burned down and in 1950 a Buddhist monk set fire to the pavilion, burning it down.

The pavilion was rebuilt in 1955 and gold leaf was used to cover the top two stories. The structure is one of the most popular in Kyoto and designated as a World Heritage Site.
10. The quite boringly named M6B2 Tower of Biodiversity plays an environmentally friendly role with its interesting construction. In which city, nicknamed the City of Light, is it located?

Answer: Paris

The M6B2 Tower of Biodiversity is a high-rise apartment building in Paris, France that is constructed with stainless steel netting covering the outside that is used for plants to grow on. The netting extends up and over the top of the building which also has a rooftop garden.

The idea is that the wind will carry the seeds from the plants located all around the building allowing them to spread. Plant covered buildings are becoming more popular - there is a plant covered luxury hotel in Brazil, vertical gardens in Paris and Lebanon and apartment towers in Australia covered in plants, just to name a few.
