Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was elected President of France in 1848 and proclaimed himself Emperor (Napoleon III) in 1851. He was deposed in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, when he and about 30,000 men were taken prisoner by the Prussians at Sedan. (The French thereupon proclaimed a republic).

His son, the Prince Imperial (Crown Prince) Eugene was killed in the Zulu war while serving in the British army.

Maximilian, a Habsburg prince was made Mexican Emperor by Napoleon III in 1861. He was executed by the troops of Mexican President Juarez in 1867.
