Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The modern 2nd Ranger Battalion was activated in what year?

Answer: 1974

After examining the military's experiences in Vietnam, Army Chief of Staff General Creighton Abrams recognized the need for a highly trained, mobile, assault force capable of executing missions in any environment. As a result, he ordered the formation of two Ranger Battalions.
2. What military installation serves as the home to the 2nd Ranger Battalion?

Answer: Fort Lewis, Washington

Fort Lewis is located just south of Tacoma, Washington and is adjacent to McChord Air Force Base. This location provides the Rangers of 2nd Battalion the opportunity to train in several terrain settings without leaving their local area.
3. Ranger patrol caps have luminous "cat eyes" affixed to the back to allow Rangers maintain contact with each other in situations where there is limited visibility. What shape of luminous tape indicates that a Ranger is from 2nd Battalion?

Answer: One horizontal rectangle

The cat eyes on the back of the patrol caps are also organized to indicate which company within a particular Battalion a Ranger serves. For example, a Ranger from Alpha Company would have a different configuration than a Ranger from Bravo Company even if they were both from the same Battalion.
4. Before the formation of the 75th Ranger Regiment, RIP (the Ranger Indoctrination Program) for 2nd Battalion was housed where?

Answer: North Fort Lewis

Wearers of the "Old Scroll" insist that RIP was far more difficult when it was conducted at the Battalion level. In fact, most Rangers insist that their RIP class, no matter where it was conducted, was the hardest on record.
5. Name the area just behind the Ranger compound that has been the site of countless hours of additional training for new personnel.

Answer: Noble Hill

Noble Hill is also the area where the Rangers perform sustained airborne training before parachute operations and conduct a portion of their Expert Infantryman's Badge training and testing.
6. In September of 1981, 2nd Battalion's Commander (Lt.Col. Powell), and several other Rangers perished in a C-130 crash in which state?

Answer: Nevada

2nd Battalion was doing special operations training near Indian Springs, Nevada. The C-130 designated as Bird 6 crashed and caught fire. The quick reaction of the Rangers aboard that plane and the heroism of two of the men who perished prevented many more men from losing their lives that day.
7. Banner Day is a Battalion-wide series of athletic competitions designed to build esprit-de-corps. Before it was banned as being too dangerous, what was the name of the no-holds-barred rugby/football type of game that was the highlight of Banner Day?

Answer: American Ball

So many men sustained injuries during American Ball competitions that the Battalion Commander removed it from the list of Banner Day activities. Rumor has it that American Ball is still played as an informal PT activity, but these have not been substantiated.
8. When returning from deployments, the Rangers often parachute onto which Fort Lewis Drop Zone?

Answer: Point Salines

Point Salines (formerly Abrams) Drop Zone is large enough for a Battalion sized airborne operation and close enough to the barracks for the Rangers to walk in a fairly short time. The other drop zones listed are either too small for a Battalion sized drop or inconvenient for redeployment purposes.
9. When 2nd Battalion conducted its airborne operation onto the island of Grenada in 1983, who was the Battalion Commander?

Answer: Lt. Col. Ralph Hagler

Colonel Hagler was very much admired and respected by the men who served under him. He led from the front and inspired many Rangers to become exemplary leaders.
10. When looking at the uniform of a 2nd Battalion Ranger, his Battalion affiliation can be distinguished by what indicators on his beret flash and his jump wings oval?

Answer: Two horizontal tick marks embroidered on the edges

All of the units in the Ranger Regiment can be distinguished by these tick marks. First Battalion has one tick mark, Third Battalion has three tick marks, and the Regimental Headquarters has zero. Of course you can always look at the scroll on the Rangers LEFT shoulder to determine his current unit affiliation.
