Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is not a word for an animal in the Vietnamese language?

Answer: nha

A 'cho' is a dog, 'ngua' is a horse and 'lon' is a pig. 'Nha' is the word for house in Vietnamese. Incidentally, the measure word (or counting word) for animals is 'con'...so one dog would be 'mot con cho'.
2. To which place would you go to check out a book?

Answer: thu vien

'Thu vien' is the word for library. The others are as follows: nha hang = restaurant, buu dien = post office and cho = market.
3. 'May bay', 'xe o-to' and 'xe buyt' are all words belonging to which of these categories?

Answer: Transportation

'May bay' = airplanes, 'xe o-to' = car and 'xe buyt' = bus. The 'o-to' may have given it away...it's transliterated from the French 'auto'!
4. Which of the following individuals could (theoretically) wear a crown?

Answer: vua

'Vua' is the word for king. 'Giao' is the word for teacher, an 'y ta' is a nurse and 'luat su' is the word for lawyer...we certainly wouldn't want a lawyer wearing a crown, would we?
5. The term 'sau rieng', literally translating into English as 'private sorrow', is used for which fruit?

Answer: Durian

The story of the durian is a lovely but sad one...I can't recount it here, but suffice it to say the fruit is aptly named. The smell of it may provide reason not to try it, but the inside of the fruit is sweet and fragrant...give it a try!
6. Which of the following sets of words are terms for body parts?

Answer: dau, tim, tay

Dau, tim, tay = head, heart, {arm;} mot, hai, ba = one, two, {three;} cam, chanh, xoai = orange, lemon, {mango;} ga, bo, ca = chicken, beef, fish.
7. True or false, in Vietnamese the term for a person who is much older than you (about 2 generations) is unisex?

Answer: True

The term 'bac' can be used for a man or a woman who is your elder by two generations.
8. What do the terms 'dong y', 'chau au' and 'hang khong' have in common?

Answer: Derived from the Chinese

'Dong y' (tongyi) meaning 'agree', 'chau au' (Ou zhou) meaning 'Europe' and 'hang khong' (hang kong) meaning airline, like many other words in the Vietnamese language, are derived from the Chinese language.
9. It's considered impolite to ask someone you have just met for the first time about their occupation, how much money they have made and other personal questions in Vietnam.

Answer: False

These questions are considered polite and are used to 'break the ice'!
10. This question may be easy for Francophiles...which of these is the word for cheese?

Answer: Pho-mat

'Pho-mat' is the Vietnamese transliteration of 'fromage' from the French for cheese!
