Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When I think about Vietnam one of the first things that comes to mind is the cuisine. Vietnamese food is unique and delicious, but also includes influences from other cuisines such as French and Chinese. For example, the Vietnamese love to eat 'bit-tet', an element of French influence. How does 'bit-tet' translate into English?

Answer: Steak

'Bit-tet' is a transliteration of 'beefsteak', a very popular dish amongst those who are meat lovers in Vietnamese culture.
2. If I have my 'ca-phe' with some 'sua', what am I prepared to consume?

Answer: Coffee with milk

Vietnamese 'Ca-phe sua' has a lovely flavor, but beware...Vietnamese style coffee is strong! Some of the best tasting coffee in the world comes from Vietnam. If you would like to add some sugar, request 'duong'.
3. When you visit Vietnam, you will certainly see a bunch of 'xich-lo' everywhere you look in the large cities. What is a 'xich-lo'?

Answer: Mode of transport

'Xich-lo' is transliterated into 'cyclo' in English, and was originally transliterated into Vietnamese from French. A cyclo is a bicycle with three wheels, one in front and two in the back. A small carriage on the back can hold one or two people for a nice ride. Be sure to tip the cyclo driver generously, they are usually among the poorest of the poor in Vietnam.
4. During the Vietnamese New Year, called 'Tet', small red envelopes are passed to younger people with money in them. What is this practice called?

Answer: Li xi

'Li xi' essentially means 'luck money'. You will always see small red envelopes passed to children during the 'Tet' period...and in fact you can see this happening in China during the Chinese New Year as well (celebrated at the same time of year).
5. While in Vietnam, you will be required to carry Vietnamese cash (although in many cases you can get away with carrying American dollars, aka 'do-la' or 'My-kim') which is called what?

Answer: Dong

Be prepared with wide pockets though, being a millionaire in terms of 'Dong' isn't a great accomplishment. Fortunately, they have very large denominated bank notes in Vietnam.
6. If you have just had your pocket picked and are frustrated, and want to express your unhappiness, what is a useful exclamation in Vietnamese?

Answer: Troi oi!

'Troi oi' is a cry to the heavens (similar to 'Oh, God!')...and whatever God(s) may reside there. Usually it doesn't help much, but boy does it feel good after you have said it!
7. If I want to tell my wife I 'love' her, which of these words must I use?

Answer: Thuong

'Thuong' means love...it's a very useful word, but don't use it in vain! To say I love you to someone, you could say 'Toi thuong _____!' with their name placed in the blank.
8. Which of the following words is not for a type of dish that can be found in your kitchen cabinet?

Answer: Khac

'Khac' means 'different', while a 'tach' is a cup (from the French 'tasse'), 'dia' is a plate and 'bat' is a bowl. Of course you could ask for a 'different plate', i.e. 'mot dia khac'!
9. Uh oh, you have a toothache. Better go see which of the following?

Answer: Nha si

A 'nha si' is a dentist, he/she will certainly give you some relief. I don't think going to see a doctor 'bac si', a nurse 'y ta' or a secretary 'thu ky', would do you much good, but hey...you never know!
10. On your way to and from Vietnam, you will likely fly in a plane. Which of these is the Vietnamese term for 'airplane'?

Answer: May bay

'May bay' literally translates as 'flying machine'...an apt name I think for an airplane. 'Cong vien' is a public park, 'chom chom' is a rambutan (tropical fruit) and 'cua so' is a window...you will want to look out of the 'cua so' of your 'may bay' so you can see the beautiful rice fields of Vietnam! Happy travels and thanks (cam on) for trying this quiz!
