Subject: does word wizard have a sense of humor?

Posted by: garrybl

I've been struggling for a week with terrible letters.
But having got to a point where I could see light at the end of the tunnel Ive had 11 letters three times in the past few days.
My 12th letter when I was looking for an 11 letter word has been first Z, then X, then J.
Each time I clear out the *** killer letter in a four letter word and go back to try again...but it really feels like the system is mocking me. And yes I expect the Q any moment now.

I's and N's are common enough that I hold onto G's like gold. That makes an ijlnstant and very versatile -ing endng ready to go in your letter bank I agree I haven't seen many Y's in the long run...X's also seem fairly rare as do (mercifully) J's

My least received letter, is whatever letter I happen to need at that time.

I see more of X than I do of K.

Oh yeah..forgot about K....that je is pretty scarce over here too.

Though...I have a vague sense that it is somewhat like the epic flags. A particuar letter may be elusive to one player but borderint on abundant for another.

On reflection I was about to say 'K' but I saw I'd been beaten to it.

K and V and W are not especially helpful letters but should come up in total once every 25. I dont think they do. They seem to hex me far less than the killers (Q Z J X -- half a % in total meaning one every 200 letters...right).

C/B/M/Y/F are the average-minus letters I suppose,
PG the average (in total they represent about 20% frequency each being 1.5-3%)
and
ETAOINSHRDLU ought to dominate on letter-frequency grounds. (75% of the time)

If we could get the killers once in a hundred in total it would still be four times as often as it should be and for me would reduce from what I DO see -- once in 25-50 -- by a big factor.

Yes, but it would seem to take some of the challenge out of the game if it were running perpetually downhill and with a tailwind...so to speak

This is why I don't intentionally pursue the 11-letter words. I am fine with the eight, nine, and ten-letter words, and only getting the eleven letter ones extremely rarely. And I've never gotten a twelve letter word.

I too have never had a 12.

I had a tough decision to make once in that area. I had a standalone 11 plus an S...the word checker came up green for the plural form with the s added on (far from a given..many obscure plurals are excluded). So I could have played a 12 but opted to keep my S for a rainier day under the logic that there is no badge for a 12...and it is the same point value in the letter game as an 11.

I wish i could smugly proclaim my own wisdom and that it led immediately to another 11...but no. In hindsight, playing the 12 for the novelty of it would have been better.

I know T is a 'good' letter, but I have 5 of them. I'm up to 11 right now and the rest are 2 N's, 2 O's, and 2 I's. A bit more variety might be nice.

Nope. 12th letter was another O.

For 24 hours word wizard was 'playing nice'. I only got ONE Z in my first 12 letters after my first-ever 12-letter word. ZEBU got rid of that nicely. But I did have 11 consonants and only one vowel. Could be worse -- no unplayable consonants in there! So I switched four consonants for two vowels, picked up a fourth vowel, and lo and behold 'NEUTRALISTS' is a word...imagine my surprise.

Its that Q moment.
A great 11 letters with about ten outs for an 11 letter word.
Naturally here comes the Q. Well I fooled it, even at the cost of my only A and I for QADI. The last one required me to trade all my consonants in pairs (naturally no U came along the way) till I could trade out the Q.
I'm guessing I need a minimum of 30 hours play for a shot at an 11-letter word and if I can see 30 letters that don't include a Q or Z I'm happy. So far in the last two days 2 x Q, 1xZ. And when it always come on letter 12 you feel like someone somewhere is watching you and laughing.

Pulled a D, thought, ok, not too shabby, I can add that to the end of lots of other words to get that bit of extra credit. Four more D's later, and I'm not so thrilled. Especially when you add two V's. That's tantamount to a double salute from the old Wizard.

That is where this game differs most painfully from it's popular cousin Scrabble. There..."quiz" and "vivid" would be potential high value goldmine escapes from those letters so if you have a Scrabble playing background you cant help but get a momentary passing of excitation seeing them pop up...but here...it makes just another four or five letter word :p

So having got the Z and Q we knew the J would follow which it did within the next 12 hours...,
Anyone want to bet I don't get the X in the next 12 hours? Good odds offered!

nobody willing to bet me? I duly got the X (after being off for 12 hours flying home) within 24 hours, or so it seemed.
So now it is back to waiting for the Z again.

I finally cracked.
I had to trade every single one of my consonants in for vowels. Just to clear away the B, P, X, K K that left me with no possibility of making any sort of word.

I'm down to nine sensible vowels (no U so expecting a Q any moment).Maybe I can trade some of THEM in for consonants in a go or two.

Doesn't help... the X comes back. So this is one every six-eight letters an X J Q or Z. At this stage I wonder if I'm ever going to be able to make a real word again.

I ended up submitting two 5 letter words just to get rid of all my awful letters today (Quaff and Phlox) so I could start fresh without just trading pretty much every letter I had. Those beautiful 11 letter words remain as elusive as ever.
