Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First meets Hagrid

Rubeus Hagrid is the half-giant gamekeeper for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He shows up at the island hideout to which Uncle Vernon had taken the family to escape the onslaught of mysterious letters. Harry is stunned to learn he is a wizard as Hagrid offers him a personal invitation to attend Hogwarts. The following day Hagrid helps the young wizard get the supplies he will need for school. Hagrid becomes one of Harry's closest friends.

[Book 1 chapter 4]
2. Receives invisibility cloak

Harry Potter stayed at Hogwarts over the winter break of his first year and was pleasantly surprised with an invisibility cloak on Christmas morning. The cloak had belonged to his father and was given to Harry by Headmaster Dumbledore who had been keeping it safe for James Potter. Along with the Resurrection Stone and the Elder Wand, the Invisibility cloak is considered to be one of the three Deathly Hallows. Legend has it that if a wizard has all three Hallows at the same time the wielder will be able to avoid death.

[Book 1 chapter 17]
3. First meets Dobby

Early in the second book, Harry meets Dobby the house elf at one of the worst possible times. Uncle Vernon is having a dinner party for a potential business client and wants Harry to act like he does not exist. Dobby starts by pleading with Harry not to return to Hogwarts because he is in danger if he goes back. When Harry refuses, Dobby gets Harry in trouble with Uncle Vernon. In the wizarding world, house elves are often treated like slaves. Their fondest wish is to receive clothing; when a master gives them any article of clothing, the house elf is granted immediate freedom.

[Book 2 chapter 2]
4. Destroys first Horcrux

Though the reader does not know it until "The Half-Blood Prince", the Diary of Tom Riddle is a Horcrux. Being of the darkest magic, the tool is used to house part of the soul of a witch or wizard. In this way, by having a Horcrux, the magician achieves a form of immortality, even if the body is destroyed. Of course, splitting the soul is dangerous and each time it is done the magic-user becomes less human. Sounds perfect for Voldemort! The reader is introduced to Tom Riddle's Diary in Diagon Alley when Lucius Malfoy slips it into Ginny Weasley's cauldron. At first, the book appears to be blank, until Ginny starts to write questions into it and receives mysterious answers in return. Harry finally destroys the diary with a basilisk fang towards the end of "The Chamber of Secrets".

[Book 2 Chapter 13]
5. Receives Marauder's Map

In "The Prisoner of Azkaban", the twin brothers Fred and George Weasley give Harry Potter the Marauder's Map. The map is incredibly useful for sneaking around the castle as it tells the name and place of every person at the present time. The map also shows where secret passageways are to increase the effectiveness of someone's sneaking. The map was the creative effort of Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and James Potter.

[Book 3 Chapter 10]
6. First meets Sirius Black in human form

Sirius Black is an Animagus who can transform into a large black dog. He is also Harry's godfather. The reader first learns about Black as news has spread of him escaping Azkaban wizard prison. Harry is on the Knight Bus when he first sees Sirius in his dog form, but his godfather goes unrecognized. The reader does not actually encounter Sirius in his human form until late in the third book when he asks Harry, Ron, and Hermione to bring him some food. It is at this point that the reader learns that Sirius was falsely imprisoned, and we learn that he wants to do whatever he can to help protect Harry.

[Book 3 Chapter 27]
7. Uses Gillyweed to swim like a merman

Harry Potter is mysteriously entered into the Tri-Wizard Tournament in "The Goblet of Fire" despite being under the legal age to enter the competition. Harry realizes he needs a way to hold his breath underwater for the second task and Dobby tells him about Gillyweed (note, in the films Neville gives Harry the weed). Gillyweed allows Harry to breathe underwater and grow webbed hands and feet making him a faster swimmer. While under the effects of Gillyweed, the user cannot breathe normal air. However, once the effects wear off the user can no longer obtain oxygen from water. This becomes a problem for Harry once the effects start to wear off, and he is still deep in the lake being attacked by the Merpeople.

[Book 4 Chapter 26]
8. First Occlumency lesson with Snape

In "The Order of the Phoenix", it becomes apparent that Lord Voldemort is able to enter Harry's mind with Legilimency. The only way to block Legilimency is the skill of Occlumency which Dumbledore asks Snape to teach Harry. During these lessons, Snape repeatedly works his way into Harry's mind trying to teach the young wizard how to protect himself by emptying the mind of thoughts and emotions. Of course, the tension and distrust between Potter and Snape only add to the challenge of this exercise.

[Book 5 Chapter 24]
9. Invited to the Slug Club

Horace Slughorn is a rather interesting character. He is a member of the Slytherin house but does not want to be a Death Eater or even associated with them. Slughorn is convinced by Dumbledore to become the Potion teacher at Hogwarts for Harry's sixth year. Horace loves to rub shoulders with the famous, powerful, or up-and-coming witches and wizards. Harry Potter's fame made him a prime invitation target for Slughorn. Potter only went to one Slug Club dinner where he tried to ply Horace to find out what the teacher told Tom Riddle years ago. This prying led Slughorn to hold no more Club events that year. Fortunately, Dumbledore was able to get Slughorn to share his memory about Tom Riddle, learning about how Horcruxes work.

[Book 6 Chapter 15]
10. Rides on the Gringotts dragon

During most of the seventh book, "The Deathly Hollows", Harry Potter is on the run while trying to find and destroy Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes. Harry discovers that Helga Hufflepuff's Cup is a Horcrux and that it is locked away in Bellatrix Lestragne's vault at Gringotts Bank. Being that it is nearly impossible to break into the bank, Harry recruits the help of a bank employee, Griphook. The goblin only agrees to help on the condition Harry gives over the Sword of Gryffindor. Unfortunately for Harry and his friends, Griphook betrays them as soon as the sword is given up. The alarm is raised that the vault has been breached, causing Harry, Ron, and Hermione to have to free the Gringotts dragon and fly him out of the bank to safety.
