Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which UK county is the city of Ipswich?

Answer: Suffolk

Ipswich is a large city in the county of Suffolk. It is steeped in history, and one of the best places to see that history is the Mansion House in Christchurch park. Christchurch Mansion holds a large collection of oil paintings, water-colours, drawings and prints, by Suffolk born artists from the 17th century to the present day, and includes the most important works outside London, of Suffolk-born artists, Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable.
2. If you travel north from London, along the M1, which of these cities would you NOT travel through or very close to?

Answer: Basingstoke

The M1 winds its way north from London, all the way to Leeds in Yorkshire, where it joins up with the A1 and runs all the way up the east coast of England to Edinburgh in Scotland. Basingstoke is in Hampshire, which is south west of London.
3. Which one of these British TV "soaps" is based around a fictional town near Manchester?

Answer: Coronation Street

"Coronation Street" is based around the fictional town of Weatherfield, which is supposedly near Manchester. It is the longest running TV soap opera in the world, and is exported to many countries, and has been dubbed into many languages. The character Ken Barlow appeared in the very first episode, and is to this day (Nov 2007), still played by the same actor - William Roach.
4. In Cockney rhyming slang, what would you be wearing if your put on your "best whistle"?

Answer: Your smartest suit of clothes

As with all Cockney rhyming slang, the slang expression rhymes with the actual word it is intended to represent. It is often the case however, that the slang is two or three words, but shortened to only one. In this case, your "best whistle" comes from "whistle and flute" - flute being the word that actually rhymes with suit. Confused? - many visitors to London, are both amused, and totally confused, when they hear Cockney rhyming slang! :-)
5. Where was the singer Charlotte Church born?

Answer: Cardiff

Charlotte Church was born on 21 February 1986 in Llandaff, Cardiff, south Wales.
She shot to fame as a young girl, due to her incredibly sweet and pitch perfect voice - she was very quickly given the prestigious title "Voice of an Angel" by the world's popular music media. She has, however, in recent years turned into a raunchy teenage pop singer, and the sweet, innocent, angelic little girl is long gone!
6. "The Mall" in London, is well known by tourists as being the route of many Royal processions. It runs from Admiralty Arch to the Victoria Monument, outside Buckingham Palace - but which park does it run alongside?

Answer: St James's Park

This processional route to Buckingham Palace was created by Aston Webb in 1911.
It is a very wide road, and follows the course of the old path at the edge of St James's Park, which was laid out in the reign of Charles II. In the 17th century, it soon became London's most fashionable promenade.
When foreign heads of state arrive on official visits to the UK, flagpoles on both sides of the Mall fly their national flags.
7. On what date did the UK adopt decimal currency?

Answer: 15 Feb 1971

A survey carried out by the British Market Research Bureau on "D-Day" showed that out of the 1,040 questioned, 12% thought that stores had unfairly converted the old prices.
Secret British Government documents were published on the 30th anniversary of decimalisation and revealed the concerns the Decimal Currency Board had about the changeover, which included the possible rejection of the new coins by public transport workers, and problems if the Queen died unexpectedly before the new coins were fully circulated.
8. Unfortunately, not all kids in UK are honest and law abiding. If you were a very naughty youngster, and kept getting into trouble with Police, you might be "Slapped with an ASBO" by the courts - what is an ASBO?

Answer: Anti Social Behaviour Order

An "ASBO" is an Anti Social Behaviour Order. It is one of several punishments the courts can give to unruly youngsters. It usually involves an enforced curfew, which means if the youngster is seen on the streets after a certain time, they can be arrested on sight. Corporal punishment is a term given to the use of physical punishment - caning for instance, or anything that involves inflicting mild pain. Corporal punishment was outlawed in UK many years ago, and rightly so!
9. Where was Princess Elizabeth when her father King George died - the sad event which led to her becoming Queen Elizabeth II?

Answer: At a hunting lodge in Kenya

The official announcement of the death of King George VI was given from Sandringham at 1045 GMT on 6 Feb 1952.
Princess Elizabeth was at the Royal hunting lodge in Kenya, and immediately became Queen at the age of 25.
10. Which of these paintings is NOT by British artist John Constable?

Answer: Burning of the Houses of Parliament

John Constable was born on June 11 1776, in East Bergholt, Suffolk. He is renowned as being one of the world's finest landscape artists. Most of his paintings and sketches feature landscapes and country life, around his home county - many famous examples of which are on display at the Tate Gallery in London.
