Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Arguably the most common coffee drink order when in a coffee shop in Canada has a combination of sugar and cream known by what phrase?

Answer: Double double

Just step up and order a 'double double' and you automatically get two cream and two sugar. Remarkably just across the border in New York state, you must specify two of each.
2. Tom Hanks made the movie "Bachelor Party" years ago in 1984, but in Canada (and in a few other countries around the world), what do you call the groom's pre-wedding party? It is named after an animal and usually thrown a week in advance of the wedding.

Answer: A stag party

It is called a stag. The female version of the last fling before marriage is called a 'Wedding Shower' or 'Bachelorette Party' and occasionally a 'Stagette'. When a party for both together is held which is usually a dance, it is called a 'Jack and Jill' or 'Buck and Doe'.
3. World famous awards in the field of entertainment are of course in America called the "Oscar" for film, "Emmy" for television and "Grammy" for music. In Canada we have our own prestigious awards for these fields as well. What do we call them?

Answer: Gemini, Genie and Juno

Although all represent excellence in Canadian entertainment, the Juno has become the most distinctive symbol on the world stage. This is due to the credit of the many musical performers from Canada performing around the world.
4. An American maxim from the Declaration of Independence is "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness". In Canada we have our own motto. Do you know what the equivalent words to live by from the Canadian constitution are?

Answer: Peace, Order and Good Government

In Canada, "Peace, Order and Good Government" holds a sense of pride for Canadians. It is also used in other Commonwealth nations in their constitutions. Notably they are included in Australia, South Africa and previously in New Zealand. "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" were included in the United States Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson.
5. As American as baseball and apple pie eh? Traditionally baseball is known as America's national sport. In Canada we have a national sport for summer and one for winter. What are they?

Answer: Lacrosse and Ice Hockey

That's right, ice hockey and lacrosse are the national sports of Canada. Lacrosse has been played for several hundred years with a variation enjoyed by native Canadians in the 1700's. Though hockey is now enjoyed world wide, it is still our favourite and most popular national sport.
6. Money between the United States and Canada is coined in the same denominations and terminology, dollars. Except of course for the more common use of the Canadian $2 representation. In Canada we have our $1 and a $2 denomination in coin form. What are the affectionate terms for these coins?

Answer: Loony and Toonie

Naturally due to the loon representation on the one dollar coin the name is obvious, a loony. The two dollar coin has a polar bear. When the two dollar coin came out, Canadians struggled for an affectionate nickname and settled for a 'two dollar loony' or toonie (twonie). If you cover different areas of the toonies polar bear you can find 7 different animals. With a little imagination you'll find, the polar bear, four penguins, a seal and a tyranosaurus rex.
7. Fast food is universal. All countries have their own version and favourite. In Canada an effort is being put forth to name 'Poutine' as our national dish. What constitutes this delicious meal?

Answer: French fries smothered in cheese and gravy

Poutine, which originated in Quebec, consists of french fried potatoes covered in cheese curds and then covered again in gravy. It's a delicious gooey dish! The battered wieners on a stick is obviously a pogo.
8. In Canada, we use the metric system. Everyone knows the metric system is based on tens. If you are going 100 kilometres per hour, about how many miles per hour will you be traveling at?

Answer: About 60 miles per hour

The speed limit in Canada is generally the same as the speed limits in most parts of the United States. Once metric was established in 1977, the speed limit on major highways was changed from 60 mph to 100 kph or about 62 mph.
9. Canada is made up of four regional areas, Eastern Canada, Central Canada, Western Canada and Northern Canada. The USA has states but what are the political areas in Canada divided into and how many of these are there?

Answer: Ten Provinces and Three Territories

Canada is made up of ten provinces, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland & Labrador, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. It also has three territories in the north. These are Yukon Territory, Northwest Territory and Nunavut.

The provinces receive their power from the constitution and have their own 'crown' represented by a lieutenant-governor, while territories are part of the federal realm and receive their power from the federal government.
10. Canada is among the largest countries in the world, but where does it rank on the world stage in square kilometers?

Answer: Second with 9,984,670 Sq. Km.

Second only to Russia, Canada has nearly ten million square kilometers or nearly four million square miles. Canada has one of the largest supplies of fresh water in the world. Without including our water surface area, Canada ranks fourth in the world by land alone.
