Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Shaped like chocolates found in a box of these, which had the same name.

Answer: Milk Tray Bar

The Milk Tray bar was a version of the Milk Tray box of chocolates. Each segment had a differently shaped chocolate which had various flavours like caramel, coffee cream and orange. As l recall, there wasn't a TV advert for it. However, the advert for the Milk Tray chocolate box featured a mysterious man who scaled cliffs and jumped into shark-infested water to deliver a box of Milk Tray to a woman.

He did so...'All because the lady loves Milk Tray'. The bar was discontinued in the late 80s. The chocolate box is, however, still available.
2. This pale-coloured bar had a young cowboy advertising it.

Answer: Milky Bar

Nestle's Milky Bar was first introduced in 1936. It stands out from other bars as it is made of white chocolate. It became popular because of its sweet vanilla-like flavour. It was advertised on TV by a young kid cowboy who wore a cowboy hat, glasses and a sheriff's badge.

He would save the day by saying 'The Milky Bars are on me'. The Milky Bar is still available and has remained popular.
3. 'Full of Eastern promise'.

Answer: Turkish Delight

Fry's Turkish Delight was introduced in 1914 by Fry's. It later became owned by Cadbury. It is coated in smooth milk chocolate and contains a rose-flavoured lokum, which is soft and jelly-like. The TV advert usually featured a woman portrayed in a glamorous, exotic setting enjoying her bar of Turkish Delight, in keeping with the 'Full of Eastern promise' tagline used to describe the bar.
4. Coconut flavoured.

Answer: Bounty

Mars Bounty Bar came into being in 1951. It comes in two pieces covered in milk chocolate with a coconut filling. A dark chocolate version was introduced at a later date. The TV adverts for it aimed to transport the audience to a tropical paradise, featuring palm trees, lovely beaches and clear blue waters. You can still purchase one today.
5. Dark chocolate with a white fondant filling.

Answer: Fry's Chocolate Cream

Fry's Chocolate Cream is the oldest mass-produced chocolate bar, dating back to 1866. It is made from dark chocolate and has a white fondant centre. 1960s model Twiggy was featured in a TV advert for it signing a catchy jingle called 'I Wanna Be Alone'. The adverts tended to aim for sophistication and style. Fry's Chocolate Cream is still available, so it can be purchased to this day.
6. Dark chocolate with rum and raisin flavour.

Answer: Old Jamaica

The Old Jamaica bar made its first appearance in 1970. Containing raisins, it was made with dark chocolate and had a rum and raisin flavour. Cadbury discontinued it in 1980 but has brought back limited editions over the years. It is non-alcoholic! One TV advert had a pirate saying 'Yo ho ho and the flavour of rum'. Very appropriate!
7. Caramel and nougat wrapped in milk chocolate.

Answer: Aztec

Cadbury began to manufacture their Aztec bar in the 1980s. It was created as a rival for the Mars Bar and was similar to this, consisting of a caramel and nougat filling covered with milk chocolate. It had a purple wrapper with an Aztec-style logo on it.

A TV advert for it featured an ancient cultural theme, tying it to the Aztecs' discovery of chocolate. It failed to compete with the Mars Bar, so Cadbury discontinued it in 1987.
8. This bar had faces on it.

Answer: Five Boys

The Five Boys chocolate bar was made by Cadbury and was introduced in the early 1900s. Made of milk chocolate, it was named after its wrapper, which had five boys on it, each one wearing a different expression. Each segment of the bar also had one of these boy's faces on it.

Their expressions ranged from desperation to satisfaction, alluding to the pleasure of eating chocolate! There were no TV adverts for the bar, but they appeared in print in newspapers and magazines and featured the aforementioned five faces.

It was discontinued in 1976.
9. Milk chocolate filled with peanuts, raisins, crisp cereal and fudge pieces.

Answer: Fuse

Cadbury Fuse Bar was introduced in 1996. Made of milk chocolate, it had a variety of textures as it was filled with peanuts, raisins, crisp cereal and fudge pieces. Its marketing campaign led to its being launched on 'Fuseday', 4/9/1996. TV adverts focused on energetic environments with people enjoying snacking on the bar. It was discontinued in 2006.
10. Rich golden coloured bar.

Answer: Caramac

Rowntree's Caramac bar originated in 1959. It differs from dark, plain and white colours by being golden. It is made from caramelised white chocolate and has a sweet buttery taste. It gets its name from Car for carmel and Mac for Rowntee Macintosh. Its TV adverts were not as dramatic as those featuring other chocolate bars and contained everyday scenes of people enjoying the bar. One tagline was 'Caramac keeps you going'.

It, unlike some others, remains available to buy.
