1. Chirashizushi

Chirashizushi is a type of sushi in which raw fish is plated on top of rice in a bowl. Its name literally means scattered sushi because the sushi is placed inartfully on top of rice. This type of sushi is not rolled and is a very popular treat as it is easy to make and relatively inexpensive.
2. Mochi

Gyoniku soseji is a Japanese fish sausage that is eaten as a snack. It is made from a fish paste called surimi. It is similar to the way beef jerky is consumed in the United States. In recent years, gyoniku soseji is found in emergency food kits, especially after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
4. Hiyayakko

Hiyayakko is a Japanese dish consisting of a block of chilled tofu served with different toppings. Traditionally, hiyayakko is topped with soy sauce, green onion and tuna flakes. It is a very old, popular dish that originated amongst the samurai.
5. Hoshi-imo

Hoshi-imo is a Japanese snack similar to potato chips. Made from sweet potatoes, hoshi-imo is dried or roasted and covered with sugar. They come in many shapes and sizes but traditionally are cut into long strips in Japan.
6. Gyoza

Gyoza are Japanese dumplings that come in a variety of sizes and tastes. They were first popularized in Japan after World War II when Japan occupied parts of China. Gyoza are heavily influenced by Chinese dumplings with the traditional gyoza having a similar garlic-sauce as the Chinese ones.
7. Tonkatsu

Tonkatsu is a panko-breaded and fried pork cutlet. Tonkatsu is eaten in a variety ways including straight, on sandwiches, in curries and as a topping for noodle and soup dishes. It is derived from a similar French dish called cotellette de veau.
8. Chawanmushi

Chawanmushi is a Japanese egg custard dish. It is a savory dish, not a sweet dessert like most custards. It is usually served with soy sauce, mushrooms and shrimp. It is eaten with a spoon because it has a soup-like consistency.
9. Konpeito

Konpeito is a Japanese candy primarily made entirely sugar. They are colorful candies often seen at celebrations, particularly children's births and birthdays. They are very popular candies that are shaped like balls with bulges. Originally, konpeito had a filling but that is no longer the case and is considered not traditional.
10. Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki is a savory Japanese dish made with a grilled wheat pancake with a variety of toppings. Most commonly, the toppings are cabbage, mayonnaise and ginger. It is sometimes referred to as Japanese pizza and shortened to simply "okono".
