Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
'Starter for 10' was one of Benedict's early films, dating from 2006, and based on the students' quiz show 'University Challenge', while 'Atonement' was the following year - Benedict played a friend of the family at the centre of the drama.
'War Horse' came in 2011 and featured Cumberbatch as an army officer during World War I, while 2012 saw the first of the three films based on Tolkien's novel 'The Hobbit'. Benedict's main role was to capture the movement of Smaug, the dragon, and provide his voice. The second films appeared in 2013 and 2014 with Benedict reprising the role. 'Star Trek into Darkness', released in 2013, saw him playing Khan Noonien Singh, originally portrayed by Ricardo Montalban in earlier films.
2013 was a productive year for the actor as both '12 Years a Slave' and 'Fifth Estate' were also released then. In the first of these films, Cumberbatch portrayed one of the few white characters to show any humanity (while still justifying slave ownership) and in the second he played Julian Assange, who posted intelligence leaks online.
Another real life character came in 2014 in 'The Imitation Game' with Alan Turing being the person Cumberbatch gave film life to. Benedict portrayed Dr Stephen Strange for the first time in 2016, in 'Doctor Strange' and has played this character again in subsequent films.
In the final two films of those listed Benedict played another World War I officer - in '1917' in a brief cameo towards the end of the film and a very different character in 'The Power of the Dog' (2021). The film is set in America with Cumberbatch playing a sexually repressed rancher.
Of the incorrect options, 'The Last King of Scotland' (2006) starred James McAvoy, Benedict's co-star in both 'Starter for 10' and 'Atonement'. 'The Theory of Everything' (2014) and 'The Danish Girl' (2015) both starred Eddie Redmayne while Tom Hiddleston, who was also in 'War Horse', was the actor in 'Thor' (2011) and 'I Saw the Light' (2015) playing Loki and Hank Williams respectively.
