Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Smashing Pumpkins, Zwan and _____

Answer: The Spirits in the Sky

The connecting musician is Billy Corgan. He was present at the formation of American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins in 1988. He also formed Spirits in the Sky in 2009, initially as a tribute band. Zwan was formed by Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin, the drummer for Smashing Pumpkins, as a supergroup. It was active between 2001 and 2003.
2. Soundgarden, Audioslave and _____

Answer: Temple of the Dog

Chris Cornell helped form Soundgarden in 1984 which continued until 1997 before being reformed in 2010. The band members decided to discontinue Soundgarden following Cornell's death in 2017. Audioslave was a supergroup formed in 2001 while Temple of the Dog, conceived by Cornell as a tribute to his deceased friend Andrew Wood, was active from 1990 to 1992.
3. Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss and _____

Answer: Screaming Trees

A pioneering American stoner rock band, Kyuss was formed in 1987. Originally known as Katzenjammer, then Sons of Kyuss, it was active until 1995. Josh Hommes became a touring guitarist with Screaming Trees in 1996, which lasted until 1998. Homme is probably best known as founder of Queens of the Stone Age.

This was formed in 1996 and he is the only continuing member. Another band he co-founded around that time was Eagles of Death Metal in 1998.
4. Blur, Gorillaz and _____

Answer: The Good, The Bad & The Queen

British rock band Blur, formed in London in 1988, was also known as Seymour until 1990. Gorillaz is a British virtual band, meaning that it consists of fictional band members with appearances in comic strips, music videos and the like. Damon Albarn is the connecting musician, supplying all the material for Gorillaz. In the 25 years since its formation, Gorillaz has released eight studio albums. The Good, The Bad & The Queen was a rock supergroup put together initially as a solo project by Alban in 2005 and active for around nine years before disbanding in 2019.
5. The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and _____

Answer: The Dead Weather

Husband and wife duo Jack and Meg White started off The White Stripes in 1997, with Meg on the drums and backing vocals. Indie rock, blues rock and garage rock were the main styles with the duo active until 2011. The Raconteurs (known as The Saboteurs in Australia due to an existing Raconteurs band) were formed in 2005 with two members of the Greenhornes but minus Meg, by now remarried. Jack White and Jack Lawrence went on to become part of supergroup The Dead Weather in 2009.
6. The Beatles, Wings and _____

Answer: The Fireman

Paul McCartney is the link between the bands. The Beatles were active between 1960 and 1970, with Wings, (or more correctly Paul McCartney and Wings, formed in 1971), also active for a decade. The Fireman was a duo project formed in 1992 and active for more than 30 years. It comprises McCartney and Youth (otherwise known as Martin Glover, a founder member of Killing Joke).
7. Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment and _____

Answer: The Winery Dogs

As a drummer, American musician Mike Portnoy has been involved in over ten bands, tribute bands and projects since 1985 when he co-founded Dream Theater. Bands have typically been progressive rock or heavy metal in nature. Liquid Tension Experiment is an instrumental progressive metal band that he founded in 1997 with three of the four members coming from Dream Theater.

The Winery Dogs is a power trio he co-founded in 2012, also considered a hard rock supergroup with the trio each having had success with other bands.
8. The Yardbirds, Cream and _____

Answer: Derek and the Dominos

The Yardbirds have been around since 1963 and there have been over 20 band members in that time. Eric Clapton joined them in 1963 but was unhappy with their direction and left in 1965 to join John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. In 1966 Clapton helped form Cream which lasted for three years, followed by reunions. Derek and the Dominos was another short-lived band which was active between 1970 and 1971.

A large part of his career has been as a solo artist.
9. Faith No More, Mr. Bungle and _____

Answer: Fantômas

During 1988 Mike Patton successfully auditioned as a replacement for Chuck Mosley in American rock band Faith No More. He worked with Mr Bungle during this time and, ultimately, his singing for Faith No More helped secure a record deal for Mr Bungle in 1990 with Patton as frontman for their experimental rock sound. One of the supergroups Patton subsequently joined is the American heavy metal supergroup Fantômas in 1998.

It is perhaps no surprise that the versatility of his voice has also led him to voice acting work.
10. Nirvana, Foo Fighters and _____

Answer: Them Crooked Vultures

David Grohl has been associated with a few band names during his career, including Scream, The Backbeat Band, Mondo Generator, Sound City Players and Queens of the Stone Age. He is perhaps best known for his time with Nirvana as the band's drummer and as the founder of Foo Fighters which allowed him to showcase his talents as songwriter, guitarist and vocalist.

Them Crooked Vultures was a supergroup active between 2009 and 2010, and reformed briefly during 2022, with Grohl on drums and backing vocals.
