Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Italian city was the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Naples

The competition was held at the Sala di Concerto della RAI in Naples. Built (apparently, this is from another Wikipedia translation of the "English as she is sometime spoke" variety) in the late 1950s and early 1960s, it opened in 1963 as a radio and television broadcasting station. It also apparently holds the largest pipe organ in Italy.
2. Which country won the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Luxembourg

Luxembourg took first place with their song "Poupee de cire, poupee de son" ("Wax Doll, Sawdust Doll"). Sung by France Gall, this song essentially was about how the 17-year-old singer felt about being told what to do and sing, and was full of double entendres which would not be recognised by those who did not speak French, the language in which it was performed.
3. The UK's 1965 entry was a song called "I Belong". Who sang it?

Answer: Kathy Kirby

Kathy Kirby was a blonde bombshell with a superb soprano voice. She had a number of hit songs in the mid-1960s and was one of Britain's biggest stars, but her popularity waned and she retired from singing while still in her 40s.
4. What was unusual about the winning song in the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: first 'pop' song

The 1965 winning song, Luxembourg's "Poupee de cire, poupee de son", is considered to be the first pop song to win. Previously all winning songs were ballads.
5. How many entries in the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest were sung in English?

Answer: three

Three countries sang their entries in English (for at this time there were no restriction on language used). They were

Ireland - "Walking the Streets in the Rain"
Sweden - "Absent Friend" and
United Kingdom - "I Belong"
6. One country returned to the Eurovision competition in 1965 after staying out for at least one year. Which country came back?

Answer: Sweden

Sweden returned after not competing in the 1964 competition. Their entry, "Absent Friend", was sung in English by Ingvar Wixell. It placed tenth.
7. For one country, the 1965 contest was their first. Which country had its debut at the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Ireland

This was the first year Ireland took part in the competition. Their entry, "Walking the Streets in the Rain" was sung by Butch Moore. It placed sixth.
8. Who was the presenter at the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Renata Mauro

Renata Mauro hosted the event. She is also famous for being one of the presenters of the European television show "Jeux Sans Frontieres", where contestants vied for their country's honour by wearing outlandish costumes while trying to complete tasks such as walking across a bouncing bridge over a large pool, trying to throw a ball through a clown's mouth (or something similar, I made that one up from a conglomeration of rather dusty memories).
9. There's always a halftime - what was the entertainment for the halftime of the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Mario Del Monaco

Mario Del Monaco was an operatic tenor, born in Florence, Italy. He sang with the Metropolitan Opera in the 1950s, and by the 1960s he was an operatic superstar. It is said that he performed the role of Othello 427 times.

Mauro Bigonzetti Bigonzetti was an Italian dancer and choreographer, Giovanni Giuseppe Pinetti was a magician in the 1700s and Topo Gigio was the puppet on the "Ed Sullivan Show".
10. Eighteen countries vied for the 1965 Eurovision Song crown. That there should have been a first position, second position, third etc, all the way to 18th, right? Wrong - or is it? How many countries, if any, tied for position?

Answer: six

Six countries tied for two positions. Norway and Portugal vied for 13th place, while Belgium, Finland, Germany and Spain all tied for last place.
