5. The Battle of Borodino features in which famous musical piece?

Answer: 1812 Overture

The Battle of Borodino was fought 120 km west of Moscow in September 1812. It was a tactical victory for the French: the Russian army had to withdraw and the path to Moscow was cleared for Napoleon's "Grande Armée". But it proved to be a Pyrrhic victory and the beginning of the end for Napoleon. Don't mention the Battle of Borodino in France, they would not know what you are talking about as they refer to it as "Bataille de la Moskova".

The Battle of Borodino features in Tolstoy's "War and Peace" and in Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" complete with cannon shots, fragments of "La Marseillaise" (the French national anthem) and Russia's anthem "God Save the Tsar!".

6. With a name which in Italian defines an object which assists in the act of climbing, what does the opera house "La Scala" translate to in English?

Answer: Ladder or flight of stairs

La Scala (Teatro alla Scala) is situated in Milan in Italy. The original opera house was destroyed by fire on the 25th February 1776 and was rebuilt. It was inaugurated on the 3rd August 1778 and was considered to be the premiere opera house in the world for some time.

It is still ranked as among the best in the world. Many of the world's finest singers have performed at the venue since it was re-opened in 1778. The name "ladder" is appropriate for the building, since, to get to the top deck of the viewing gallery, a patron has to scale approximately five flights of stairs. Quite a climb!

7. The rock band Thin Lizzy can trace its name back to the name of one of the world's most popular cars. What is the make and model of this car?

Answer: Model T Ford

Eric Bell, an original band member with Phil Lynott and Brian Downey, bought an English comic "The Dandy" which had a robot character called Tin Lizzie, named after the nickname for the most popular car in its day (1927), The Model T Ford. Bell suggested they change "Tin" to "Thin" to mock the Irish accent which has a propensity to make "Th" sounds as "T".

The name stuck.
