9. How many strings does a modern double bass (or contrabass) typically sport in the USA or Canada?

Answer: 4

In olden times, the contrabass had only three strings, but now it may have four or five strings, though tuned in fourths (as the viol) rather than fifths (as the violin) to E1, A1, D2 and G2. Some orchestras use a bass with five strings, but American and Canadian orchestras most commonly stick with the four-stringed instrument. One may play the double bass 'arco' (bowing) or 'pizzicato' (plucking).

The versatile double bass appears in classical music, jazz, rock-and-roll, tango, and a host of other genres. Counter-intuitively, in the 21st century the names "double bass", "contrabass", and "bass" actually refer to the same instrument!
