Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first 300 game winner, to win all their games with the same team?

Answer: Walter Johnson

The others never reached the 300 plateau. Johnson played his entire career with the Washington Senators from 1907-1927. His 417 career wins took a backseat to the great Cy Young of 511. With Walter and his three Triple Crowns, two MVPs, 110 career shutouts, and 12 strikeout titles, many think that he was the greatest pitcher in history.
2. 1975 was a historical World Series, including Boston's Carlton Fisk's 12th inning, game-winning home run against the Cincinnati Reds. Who was the series MVP?

Answer: Pete Rose

The others never played for either the Red Sox or the Reds. Fisk hit two home runs in the series but that was about it. Some say this was the reason why he was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame. It was 'Charlie Hustle' who had an amazing .485 on base percentage with five walks, and batted .370 with 10 hits.

This MVP was added to his 1963 National League Rookie of the Year Award, and the National League MVP in 1973. The Reds did win the World Series four games to three.
3. How many World Series did Babe Ruth play in as a member of the Boston Red Sox?

Answer: 3

The Babe played for six seasons in Boston from 1914-1919. The infamous 'Bambino Curse' began after the Red Sox winning the 1918 World Series and being sold to the Yankees. Ruth had a pitching record of 3-0 with Boston in World Series play.
4. Who was the first Rookie of the Year winner that was inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Answer: Jackie Robinson

The others listed did not win the award because the award began in 1947, after these greats began their career. Robinson won the first rookie award given. He was inducted into the Hall in 1962.
5. Mark McGwire did almost everything throughout his great career. Which of the following did he not do?

Answer: Hit an all-star game home run

Amazingly enough, even with 12 all-star games, Big Mac never cleared the fence. In three World Series he hit two home runs. His Gold Glove Award came in 1990. To begin his career, he won the rookie award in 1987 for hitting 49 home runs.
6. Which of the following won both a Rookie of the Year and a season Most Valuable Player Award in their career?

Answer: Jose Canseco

The others listed never won either award. Canseco, the Cuban born great, won the rookie award in 1986, then the MVP in 1988 with the Athletics. He and teammate Mark McGwire combined for a huge home run punch that led the team to three consecutive World Series from 1988-1990.
7. What do Coveleski, Hack, Musial, and Lopata, all have in common?

Answer: Their first name is Stan

Only Musial was a Cardinal, and none listed were ever catchers. Stan Coveleski was a pitcher for 14 seasons who retired in 1928. He and Stan Musial were inducted into the Hall together in 1969. Stan Lopata pitched for 13 seasons and retired in 1960. Stan Hack played for the Chicago Cubs for 16 seasons, retired in 1947, and later managed them for three years.
8. Gary Sheffield began his career with which American League team?

Answer: Milwaukee Brewers

The other teams listed were National League teams. Gary began it all in 1988 as a 19 year old with the Brewers. After four seasons in the American League, it was on to San Diego, then Florida, Los Angeles, and finally Atlanta, before being seen in the pinstripes in 2004. Sheffield was runner-up MVP in 2004 to the Angels' Vladimir Guerrero.
9. 1941 saw the last season in the 20th century that a batter hit over .400. Ted Williams was that player. Who was the MVP in this 1941 American League season?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

The others listed never played in the American League. Williams hit .406 in 1941 with the Red Sox, but it was the year of Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak that won the pinstriper the award. Joe batted .357 with 30 home runs, while Williams batted .406 with 37 home runs.
10. Maury Wills broke Ty Cobb's season stolen base record with 104 while playing for which team?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

Cobb, the 'Georgia Peach' and Detroit Tiger stole 96 bases in 1915. It would be almost 60 years before any player reached the century mark. The Dodger shortstop stole 104 bases in 1962.
