Boston United, who are based in the English county of Lincolnshire, were founded in 1934 as a successor to Boston Town FC, who were wound up in that same year.

Boston United spent the first 68 years of their existence in various leagues of the non-league system, including the Southern League, Midland League and Northern Premier League. In 2001-02, they finished top of the Nationwide Conference, on goal difference ahead of Dagenham & Redbridge, to win promotion to the Football League, replacing Halifax Town who finished bottom of the fourth tier.

Boston were massive underdogs at the Baseball Ground, but ran out 6-1 winners, helped by a hat-trick from Geoff Hazeldine. Boston's cup run ended in the next round away to Tottenham Hotspur.
Derby County were a member of Division Three (North) in 1955-56. They won promotion to Division Two in 1957 and Division One in 1969. They were crowned Champions of England two year slater when they won the Division One title in season 1971-72.
