Answer: Princess Alexandra, wife of the Prince of Wales

Princess Alexandra was the wife of Edward, Prince of Wales, son of Queen Victoria, and later King Edward VII. Although this may seem an unusual way to name a team nowadays, it was quite common in the late 19th century - many football teams at various levels in the UK had Victoria as part of their name e.g. Northwich Victoria, located 15 miles north of Crewe, were formed three years earlier in 1874..
2. Which stadium became Crewe Alexandra's permanent home in 1906?

Answer: Gresty Road

Crewe Alexandra had a number of temporary homes, including the first Gresty Road, before moving into the second ground with this name in 1906. The record attendance for this stadium was set in 1960 when 20,000 people attended an FA Cup 4th Round tie against Tottenham Hotspur. The match ended in a 2-2 draw. Crewe lost the replay 13-2.

5. Crewe Alexandra had a brief spell as members of the Football League between 1892 and 1896 before failing to win re-election. In what year did they finally become League members again?

Answer: 1921

Crewe Alexandra struggled as members of the Second Divsion of the Football League in the late 19th century and were voted out in 1896 (they were a foundation member of Division Two upon its formation in 1892). They spent the next 25 years as members of various local leagues until 1921, when the Football League created the new Division Three (North). Crewe finished in a respectable sixth place in their debut season.
6. What is Crewe Alexandra's club nickname, which reflects a local industry?

Answer: Railwaymen

Crewe has been synonymous with railways since the 1830s when the Grand Junction Railway chose the town as the site of its locomotive works, with the associated station becoming a major interchange junction in north west England. The football club appropriately chose Railwayman as their official nickname.
7. Which one of these people had a 36-year association with Crewe Alexandra between 1983 and 2019, mostly as club manager?

Answer: Dario Gradi

Dario Gradi took over as manager of Crewe Alexandra in 1983 and remained in charge for an amazing 24 years in an era when most football managers do well to last 24 months. During this period, the club twice won promotion from the fourth tier then, in 1997, defeated Brentford in a play-off final to reach the second tier after an absence of 101 years.

After being relegated in 2002, they bounced back immediately for another three-year spell in the Championship (aka the second tier). Gradi stepped down as manager in 2007 to become technical director but would return for another spell as manager between 2009 and 2011. He would remain at the club until 2019 as director of football.
8. In season 1932-33, Crewe Alexandra won a League match 8-0, to set a record for their biggest League victory. Who were they playing?

Answer: Rotherham United

This game took place on 1st October 1932, in Division Three (North). Harry Deacon and Jimmy McConnell each scored twice in this game in what was an otherwise nondescript season for the club.
9. Which one of these trophies did Crewe Alexandra win in both 1936 and 1937?

Answer: Welsh Cup

Although Crewe is in England, it was common for many years for clubs from bordering English counties to enter the Welsh Cup.
