Scunthorpe United were formed in 1899 and merged with North Lindsey United in 1910. In 1958, they reverted to their shorter moniker.

Answer: Midland League

The Midland League existed between 1889 and 1982 and is not related to the identically named league that was formed in 2014. Scunthorpe were champions of this league in 1927 and 1939. After a number of failed applications for membership of the Football League, they were finally admitted to the Third Division North in 1950 when the league expanded their numbers.
3. What is the nickname of Scunthorpe United, which reflects the town's industrial heritage?

Answer: The Iron

4. Which stadium was home to Scunthorpe United from their foundation until 1988?

Answer: Old Showground

The Old Showground had existed since the 1860s, and was the venue for various events including the annual Scunthorpe Show. The football team chose it as their home ground in 1899. The record gate for the stadium was 23,395 for an F.A. Cup tie against Portsmouth in January 1954.

The ground made history in 1958 when the first cantilever stand in UK football was built there. When safety regulations in the 1980s saw the ground's capacity slashed to 5,000, Scunthorpe opted to move to a new ground, with the last match at the Old Showground coming against Torquay United in May 1988.
5. Scunthorpe United enjoyed some of the best years of their existence in the late 1950s/early 1960s. The Third Division North title was won in 1957-58, and a number of seasons in the Second Division culminated in a fourth place finish in 1961-62. Which fullback was a club stalwart during this era, making a record 597 league appearances?

Answer: Jack Brownsword

Brownsword was signed from Frickley Colliery in 1947 when Scunthorpe were still a non-league club. He was with the club throughout their rise through the leagues, and made 783 appearances in all competitions. In 1965 he was made coach but still made another three on-field appearances for the club after this. Shortly after his death in 2010, a road leading to the club's stadium was renamed Jack Bownsword Way in his honour.
6. Apart from a dalliance with an all-red strip in the 1970s, Scunthorpe's first-choice kit through most of their history has consisted of which two colours?

Answer: Claret and Sky Blue

Scunthorpe's main strip until the early 1960s was usually claret with sky blue sleeves. White shirts with blue shorts were briefly used in the 1960s followed by the all-red outfit in the 1970s. The traditional colours were revived in 1982 using various designs, with vertical stripes proving particularly popular with their kit manufacturers.
7. The late 1960s saw two players, Ray Clemence and Kevin Keegan, who would would go on to make multiple appearances for England, on Scunthorpe's books. Both were eventually sold, separately, to which leading club?

Answer: Liverpool

Ray Clemence was a goalkeeper who joined Scunthorpe in 1965, making 48 league appearances for the club, before being sold to Liverpool in 1967. Kevin Keegan, a striker, joined Scunthorpe the following year, scoring 18 goals in 124 league appearances. He joined Liverpool in 1971.
8. Which famous cricketer made 11 league appearances for Scunthorpe United in the early 1980s?

Answer: Ian Botham

Ian Botham is best known as a cricket all-rounder who played test and one-day cricket for England between 1997 and 1992. He also dallied in football and signed for non-league Yeovil Town in 1978, before joining Scunthorpe in 1980. His sporadic appearances for the club during the cricket close season led to the popular pub quiz question at the time - which three England captains have played for Scunthorpe? The answer of course was Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan and Ian Botham.
9. In 1988, Scunthorpe United became the first Football League club to move into a brand new stadium since Southend United in 1955. What is the non-sponsorship name of that new ground?

Answer: Glanford Park

Glanford Park was opened in August 1988, with an initial capacity of just over 11,000. The stadium is all-seated and all-covered with the corners filled in. The record attendance at the stadium was 9,077 for a League Cup tie against Manchester United in September 2010.
10. After a spell of over forty seasons in the bottom two divisions of the Football League, Scunthorpe enjoyed a short golden spell in the early 21st century, beginning with promotion to the second tier in 2007. Although they only managed a single season in the Championship at the first attempt, they bounced back in 2009 with victory in the League One play-off final at Wembley. Which London club did they defeat to secure promotion?

Answer: Millwall

The good times began to return to Scunthorpe in 2005 when they finished the League Two season as runners-up to Yeovil Town and thus secured promotion to League One. The League One title followed in 2007, and, despite immediate relegation in 2008, they bounced back again in 2009.

A sixth place finish was enough to secure the final play-off spot, and a semi-final win over Milton Keynes Dons secured a trip to Wembley to face Millwall. A 3-2 victory saw Scunthorpe back in the second tier, and this time they consolidated their newly won status, at least for one extra season.

They finished bottom in season 2010-11 and were relegated back to League One.
