Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On June 11 and June 15, 1938, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Vander Meer became the first pitcher in baseball history to throw consecutive no-hitters. Some may wonder how close he came to perfect games in those outings. How many total batters did he walk in those two games?

Answer: 11

On June 11, Johnny walked three Boston Braves in a 3-0 win. On June 15, he walked eight Brooklyn Dodgers in a 8-0 win. Vander Meer went 15-10 in the season, and retired with a 119-121 career record.
2. On May 14, 1990, the Dodgers' Fernando Valenzuela went up against the Expos and pitcher Kevin Gross in a game. What did these pitchers both do in the game?

Answer: Hit home runs off each other

A quirk in baseball that has happened less than 20 times in history, Valenzuela and Gross entered the record books on that day. Ironically, as the Dodgers were hosting the Expos at Dodger Stadium, Gross hit his off Fernando in the third inning. In the bottom of the third, Fernando repaid the favor and hit one out against Gross.

It was both pitcher's only home run of the season. The Dodgers won the game 3-2.
3. Barry Bonds astounded the world when he hit 73 home runs in the 2001 season. How many games in that season did he hit multiple home runs in one game?

Answer: 9

Bonds hit two home runs in a game seven times. He hit three in game twice on May 19 and September 9. His final home run of the season, number 73, came off Dodger pitcher Dennis Springer on October 7.
4. In 2003, Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Eric Gagne set a Major League record by throwing 63 consecutive saves. In that streak which straddled the 2002 and 2003 season, how many total innings did he pitch during the streak?

Answer: 66

Gagne began his career as a Dodger starting pitcher for three seasons, then was moved to the bullpen in 2002. In his eight saves to begin the streak in 2002, Eric threw in only nine innings. In 2003, his 55 saves came via 57 total innings. He threw 108 strikeouts and allowed 31 hits in those 66 innings. Throughout his 10-season career, he saved 187 games in 643.2 innings.

He retired in 2008.
5. The first player in history to hit two grand slams in one game off the same pitcher was a Boston Red Sox player named Rudy York in the 1940s. Who was the pitcher that was gracious enough to dish them up?

Answer: Tex Shirley

After playing his first 10 seasons with the Tigers, York was traded to the Red Sox in 1946. On July 27 in his first season in Boston, he came out of the dugout big against the St. Louis Browns and pitcher Tex Shirley. The Red Sox won the game 13-6. The first baseman hit 277 home runs over 13 seasons.

The second player to do this off the same pitcher was Cardinal Fernando Tatis in 1999. He hit two off Dodger pitcher Chan Ho Park, and both in the same inning.
6. Rickey Henderson of the Oakland Athletics lit up the basepaths and the record books in 1982 by stealing 130 bases. How many times did he steal home plate in the season?

Answer: 2

Henderson broke the season record of the Cardinals' Lou Brock, who stole 118 in 1974. During the 1982 season, Rickey stole second base 95 times, third base 33 times, and home twice. Rickey retired with an insurmountable 1406 career thefts.
7. In the 1960s, three National League sluggers hit inside-the-park home runs during the decade. Which of the following was not one of them?

Answer: Boog Powell

In July 1960, Pittsburgh Pirate Bob Skinner got his glory. Mays did it with the Giants the following month. McCarver, a catcher for the Cardinals showed his speed in June 1963. Powell played most of his career with the Baltimore Orioles. He had the power but not the speed due to his being a little on the heavy side. Boog stole only 20 bases in his 17 seasons.
8. Amongst some of the worst teams in baseball history was the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. The lost 134 games in the season. Another dismal team was the 1951 St. Louis Browns. The Browns led the league in all the wrong categories, and had only one pitcher with a winning record. Who was that pitcher?

Answer: Ned Garver

The Browns led the league in hits allowed, home runs allowed, runs allowed, highest earned run average, and average hits per game. They finished the season with a 52-102 record. It was also the season for the Eddie Gaedel incident, of a dwarf pinch-hitting in a game. Garver was the first pitcher in history to win 20 games on a team that lost 100 in a season.

He went 20-12 in the season. The Browns also rostered Satchel Paige who went only 3-4 in the season.
9. Things get better or easier with age? In 2010, this 47-year old pitcher faced the Atlanta Braves in a game on May 7. Who was this pitcher?

Answer: Jamie Moyer

The others were all retired. Moyer was in his 24th season, and fifth with the Phillies. Jamie was the oldest player in baseball in 2010, started 19 games and finished the season with a 9-9 record.
10. The American League began it all in 1901. The first American League switch-hitter to hit a home run from both sides of the plate in one game was Philadelphia Athletic Wally Schang in 1916. The National League opened their doors and began play in 1876. Which year saw a player in the National League do this for the first time?

Answer: 1937

Strangely enough, the National League would wait 61 years before anyone saw this feat. It was Augie Galan of the Chicago Cubs who did it on June 25th in a 11-2 win over the Brooklyn Dodgers. The great Mickey Mantle and Eddie Murray both did this an amazing 10 times in their careers.
