Gretzky was a racer, but he did it on ice in the National Hockey League -- his first pro team was the Indianaplis Racers in the WHA (but he was quickly traded to Edmonton). The Canadian great made his name mostly with the Edmonton Oilers and the Los Angeles Kings.

The 2nd Winter Olympics were held in 1928 in St. Moritz with 25 nations competing whereas the 5th Winter Olympics in 1948 in St. Moritz included 28 nations. The town of St. Moritz is at an elevation of 1,800 m (5,910 ft) and it is named after the 3rd century CE Roman martyr Saint Maurice.

Although it is associated with winter sports, St. Moritz receives over 300 days of sunshine annually and it is a popular locale for sailing, cycling and running.
