3. CRICKET: Renowned for a fruitful career, how did renowned Australian cricketer, Charlie Macartney (1886-1958), hone his batting skills as a child?

Answer: Hitting apples with a bit of cedar wood

Charles Macartney played cricket for Australia in 35 test matches between 1907 and 1926, taking time off in the First World War to join the Australian Imperial force where he was really tested under fire, and wounded. Also known as an all round bowler, Charlie was renowned for his rapid accumulation of runs in matches.

As a child he practised his batting skills with a piece of cedar wood, hitting apples delivered at him by his grandfather in the family orchard. Comically so, he later honed his bowling skills playing with his brother - where the family dog was the fielder.

He passed away at the age of 72 from a heart attack. She'll be apples, mate.

4. NAME THE SPORT - Which of these is NOT a track and field event?

Answer: balance beam

Balance beam (abbreviated as BB) is one of the competitive events for women in artistic gymnastics. It consists of a routine performed for up to 90 seconds (1:30 minutes) on a small, thin beam (10 cm/4 in wide), raised from the floor, and covered in leather or suede. Routines include a mix of leaps, turns, acrobatic skills, and dance elements; gymnasts often perform barefoot, though they are also allowed to wear special shoes. Since the 1970s, balance beam routines have considerably increased in difficulty, following the example set by legendary gymnasts such as Olga Korbut and Nadia Comaneci.

6. In cricket, what is the main difference between a "Test match" and a "One Day International" (ODI) ?

Answer: The "Test" match has a 5 day limit.

Test match cricket is played between two teams, usually representing different nations. Each team is allowed to bat for two innings alternating with the opposing team. The winner is decided on aggregate runs scored. The time limit for the game is 5 days normally, but there have been instances where an extra day is allocated by common agreement between the opposing sides. Sometimes, a team may elect to defer their second innings, if they feel that they have enough runs on the board from their first innings.

In this case, they can bat their second innings out of turn if they require some more runs to beat their opponents. ODI matches (One Day Internationals) are completed on the same day, and is a much more up tempo format of the game.
