Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. FIFA WORLD CUP - Marco Antonio Rodriguez was the only Mexican referee selected by FIFA to officiate at the 2014 World Cup. In which country, known for its caipirinhas and a famous carnival, was the 2014 tournament held?

Answer: Brazil

The 2014 World Cup took place in Brazil, although much of the country's population actively protested the decision since a lot of public money was being used for this event. Brazil is a country in South America, and it is a Portuguese-speaking nation since they declared independence from Portugal on September 7, 1822. Marco Antonio Rodriguez, who is also a church pastor and a P.E. teacher, had refereed the 2006 and 2010 World Cups before being selected for 2014, where he officiated one of the tournament's semi-finals (the unforgettable Germany 7-1 Brazil.) Germany would end up becoming World Champions by beating Argentina in the final.

3. NAME THE SPORT - If I was watching the weight throw at the Cowal Games and listening to bagpipes, I would be in attendance at what sporting event?

Answer: Highland games

The Cowal Games, also called the Cowal Highland Gathering, is an annual event held at Dunoon, Argyllshire. It is considered to be the largest Highland game in the world, with about 3500 participants and 23,000 spectators present. There are athletic events like the weight throw, where a metal ball attached to a chain or handle is thrown, and the person who throws it the greatest distance is the winner.

In addition to the athletic contests there is a bagpipe competition for individuals and bands, as well as the Scottish National Highland Dancing Championships.

4. TRACK & FIELD: In the shot put event, the athlete must "put" or throw a "shot" as far as possible. What is the shot?

Answer: a sphere

That shot is basically a heavy ball. The event likely evolved from ancient rock-throwing events, though the first written stone-throwing event was recorded in the Scottish Highlands in the first century CE. By the Middle Ages, soldiers were competitively throwing cannonballs.

By the nineteenth century, athletes in the Highlands were throwing more or less modern shots, and in 1866, the British Amateur Championships included a shot put competition. It has been a part of the Olympics for men since 1896 and for women since 1948.

In contemporary shot put competition, the gloveless thrower must rest the shot by his neck and, with one hand, release it above shoulder height.

5. BASEBALL - Bob Feller was the first modern day Major League Baseball pitcher to strike out 300 batters in a season. He did this in 1946. Which team did Feller spend his entire 18-season career with?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The other teams did not exist in 1946. Feller fanned 348 batters and went 26-15 in the season. He threw a Triple Crown in 1940. In 1965, Sandy Koufax of the Dodgers broke Feller's season record by striking out 382. The great Nolan Ryan would top Koufax with 383 in 1973.

7. Which of these outdoor sports is least likely to be cancelled or postponed due to inclement weather such as heavy rain or snow?

Answer: football (NFL)

Those gridiron players play in nearly every kind of weather except lightning storms. Of course we are talking about these sports in their outdoor versions, where weather can be a factor. Baseball, golf and cricket games are often delayed, postponed or even cancelled due to a light rain. Trying to grip a wet bat or club is only one of the factors.
