Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which sport would you find the following moves: ollie; kickflip; lipslides and nose grinds?

Answer: Skateboarding

The ollie is generally one of the first moves learnt by beginners in skateboarding. It involves both the rider and the board being airborne at the same time without using the rider's hands for support. The other three are more advanced moves.

2. CURLING: In the sport of curling, what term is given to the two people wielding brooms in front of the travelling stone?

Answer: Sweepers

The two sweepers in the sport of curling have to be able to calculate not only the speed and direction of the stone once it has been released by the thrower, but also how much pressure they should exert on the ice to enable the stone to travel along a straighter path.

This is because stones tend to curl as they slow down. By sweeping to the front, left or right of the stone, this slightly alters the stone's trajectory.

3. CRICKET - The West Indies is an international team made up of players from multiple Caribbean countries. Which of these countries has NEVER had players representing it as part of the West Indies?

Answer: Comoros

Comoros (or the Comoro Islands) are off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, not in the Caribbean. Many Caribbean nations are keen players of cricket, a legacy of British colonialism. Each island nation is too small to produce a strong team, but combined they have been formidable at times, especially during the 1970s and '80s. Each of the incorrect options was the home of an outstanding cricketer: Michael Holding was a fierce fast bowler from Jamaica; Andy Roberts hailed from Antigua and Barbuda, and Brian Lara was born in Trinidad and Tobago.

4. MOTOR RACING: In which country is the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race held every year?

Answer: France

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a prestigious endurance car race held annually in June near the town of Le Mans, which is situated in northwestern France. Le Mans is the world's oldest (active) endurance racing event, having started in 1923. Unlike many races, the winner of Le Mans is not determined by who crosses a finishing line first, but by who can cover the greatest distance in the 24 hour timeframe. (So you still have to drive really quickly!) Just in case you are wondering, the team consists of three drivers that rotate during the 24 hour period. No one driver can stay behind the wheel for more than a total of 14 hours. Le Mans is part of the FIA World Endurance Championship which is contested over seven rounds.

These take place across Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East and the races are of varying distances, with the shortest being 6 hours and the longest being Le Mans at 24 hours.

5. OLYMPIC GAMES - In every Olympic figure skating competition from 1964-2006, which country's athletes won gold in the pairs discipline?

Answer: Russia/Soviet Union

The Soviet team of Liudmila Belousova/Oleg Protopopov began the Russian pairs' domination by winning Olympic gold in 1964. This tradition continued in the following 11 Winter Olympics. In 2002, a judging scandal resulted in the gold medal being shared by Russian skaters Elena Berezhnaya/Anton Sikharulidze, and Canadians Jamie Sale/David Pelletier.

6. NAME THE SPORT: Which professional sport is indicated when a television promo says "Knicks, Nets, Lakers, Clippers"?

Answer: Basketball (NBA)

The four franchise names are teams that compete in the National Basketball Association's (NBA) North American professional basketball league. Beginning in 1946 in New York City as the Basketball Association of America (BAA), a 1949 merger with the National Basketball League (NBL) saw the NBA pick up its present name.

The Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks are both based in New York City, while the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers are similarly based in the same West Coast city.

10. Which sport used to begin with a "bully-off"?

Answer: Field Hockey

Back in the days when I started playing Hockey the game always began with a "bully-off". The process was that with your stick you tapped "ground, stick, ground, stick and ground, stick". You then competed for the ball. This start was discontinued in 1981 when it was replaced by the "pass back".
