1. DARTS - Nicknames are a mainstay in Darts, which Dutch player is best known under the moniker of 'Barney'?

Answer: Raymond van Barneveld

The man called 'Barney', Raymond van Barneveld, began his career at age 17, starting out with the BDO and winning a total of four world titles between 1998 to 2005 before making his move to the PDC in 2006 for a greater challenge. Within a year, 'Barney' took his first PDC world title, beating Phil 'The Power' Taylor in the final.

England won the World Cup in 1966, 4-2 in extra time. Cassius Clay (later Muhummad Ali) won Gold in 1960. Sachs and MacDonald died in the 1964 Indy 500 after the second lap incident that involved seven cars.

Steffi Graf won 22 Grand Slam singles titles. In 1988, she became the first player to attain the 'Golden Slam', winning the U.S., French, Australian Open, and Wimbledon, together with Gold at the Seoul Olympics. Andre Agassi won the Men's Singles title at Wimbledon in 1992.

Answer: Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe won both the Pentathlon (5 events) and the Decathlon (10 events) in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. When it was determined that he had played semi-pro baseball (essentially for room and board), he was stripped of those medals. In 1983, 30 years after his death, his medals were restored. The others are all Gold medal winners from the USA.

May 17, 1939 was the first ever televised sporting event in U.S. history. The baseball game pitted Princeton against Columbia in a college contest. Princeton won 2-1.

This famous horse race is run every Spring (first Saturday in May) in Louisville, Kentucky, and is the first leg of the Triple Crown of horse racing. The first horse to break 2 minutes was Secretariat in 1973.

Kentucky Derby -- 1 1⁄4-mile (2.0 km) at Churchill Downs.
Preakness Stakes -- 1 3⁄16-mile (1.9 km) at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.

Answer: Curling

Curling, because of the mental acuity involved. This game, which is played on ice, consists of sliding big flat stones across the frozen surface. You are aiming towards a bullseye. There are players called sweepers who use brooms to get the stone to go in certain directions.

Answer: Middle distance running

Herb Elliott was a middle distance runner who in 1958 set the world record for the mile run, being 3:54 and only months later setting the 1500 metres world record, at 3.36.0. Elliott won the gold medal at the Rome Olympics in 1960 for the 1500 metres race.

As for running the mile race, during Elliott's active period he never lost a race, and in that time achieved 36 wins. What an achievement.
