5. ATHLETICS: What long jumper was a member of the US Olympic Team in 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996?

Answer: Carl Lewis

Carl Lewis's streak of 65 consecutive victories in international long jump competitions, between 1981 and 1990 (when he was beaten by Mike Powell at the World Championships), was one of the longest winning streaks in any sport. But he was also a sprinter, and ranked at or near the top in the world rankings as a 100m and 200m runner, as well as the long jump, for most years in the 1980s.

Although he was on the 1980 Olympic team, his medal tally did not start until 1984, when he won four: 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and long jump. 1988 saw him win gold in the 100m and long jump, and silver in the 200m; 1992 gold medals were in the 4x100m relay and the long jump, and the last of his nine gold medals in the Olympic games came in the long jump in 1996.

6. NAME THE SPORT - You are watching a sporting event on television and the commentator makes a remark about "ring generalship." What sport are you most likely observing?

Answer: boxing

In boxing, control of what happens inside the ring is a key both to scoring and to ultimate victory. A boxer controls the action with his or her footwork, punching, and intelligence. This permits the boxer exercising ring generalship to move his or her opponent into a position in which it is easiest to land the most effective punches.

A boxer exhibiting ring generalship also dictates the pace at which the fight takes place. The fighter who does the best job controlling the ring normally wins the fight.

10. On August 22, 2007, a 53-year old amateur golfer named Sheila Drummond scored a 144 yard hole-in-one. What was so amazing about this particular hole-in-one?

Answer: she is completely blind

Sheila Drummond has been completely blind since 1982, due to macular degeneration as a result of diabetes. She said, "I heard the ball strike the flagstick", and then her three playing friends yelled, "It went in!" It's the first recorded hole-in-one by a 100% blind woman, although it's a feat that has been registered by several 'blind' men. The odds of getting a hole-in-one for a sighted person is somewhere between 20,000 and 33,000 to 1 according to "The American Hole-in-One Official Registry".
