Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In golf, what is the name of the biennial clash between the best male golf pros of Europe and the USA?

Answer: Ryder Cup

Named after Samuel Ryder, a golf enthusiast and entrepreneur from Manchester who gained a fortune by setting up one of the world's first mail order companies, Ryders Heath and Heather Seed Company. After his doctor told him to get more fresh air and exercise, Ryder took up golf and became a single-digit handicap player within a year at age 51. He was so taken up by the sport that, in 1927, he decided to organise a tournament between the United Kingdom and the US. He donated a golden trophy and five pounds for every member of the winning team.

The Solheim Cup is the women's equivalent of the Ryder Cup. The Stanley Cup is the most coveted prize in ice hockey, whereas the America's Cup is the trophy of oldest sailing competition in the world.

8. TENNIS: What all-time great German tennis player was the first person to win a Golden Grand Slam, by triumphing at all four major tournaments and at the Olympic games in the same year?

Answer: Steffi Graf

In 1988, Steffi Graf completed the astonishing feat of winning the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, and then topped it off by claiming the gold medal at the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul. She also became the first player to win a calendar year Grand Slam on four different surfaces (grass, clay and two different types of hard court): earlier players to pull off the feat did so when three of the four majors were played on grass.

This was only the early stages of a magnificent career that saw Graf win a staggering 22 grand slam titles (with at least four of each!) and be the number one player in the world for an astonishing total of 377 weeks.

The three other choices also won Golden Slams, but they did it later and not in the same calendar year. And none of them are German!

9. UK FOOTBALL- Who established a Tottenham Hotspur club record when he scored 266 goals in 379 matches for the club?

Answer: Jimmy Greaves

Born James Peter "Jimmy" Greaves in the East Ham district of London in 1940, he retired after a professional career that lasted from 1957 until 1980 with a remarkable goals to games ratio. He scored 366 league goals in his career in only 528 games. His record strike rate for England is unmatched in the post-war era: 44 goals in 57 games. To put this in perspective, England legends Bobby Charlton's record 49 goals took him 106 games to achieve, Gary Lineker played 80 games for his 48 goals, and Alan Shearer scored 40 times in 63 appearances. Of the alternatives, Bobby Smith scored 108 times for Spurs in 317 games between 1955 and 1964, setting a record that Greaves would break a few years later; Martin Chivers scored 174 times for Spurs in 367 games; and Welshman Cliff Jones scored 159 goals in 378 games for the club.
