Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is not a member of the 500 home run club?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

All but Gehrig are members. Had it not been for Lou's terrible disease that ended his game, he certainly would have topped his own 493 career home runs. After playing a full season in 1938, he played in only eight games the following season. This full-time Yankee played for 17 seasons. He died at the age of 37 in 1941.
2. Which of the following was never a Rookie of the Year?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

The others were all award winners from 1984-1992. Sosa split his first season with the Rangers and White Sox in 1989. His first full season in 1990, did not even show him in the top ten rookie voting. It was not until 1993, in his second season with the Cubs, that Sammy started to come around.
3. Which of the following was never a Cy Young winner?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

The others won it at least four times in their career. The 'Ryan Express', somehow avoided the coveted award all his 27 season career. Although he was in the top 10 voting for the award eight times, he was runner-up only once. In 1973, as a California Angel, he lost the Cy to Jim Palmer of the Baltimore Orioles.
4. Which of the following never batted .400 in a season?

Answer: Tony Gwynn

Gwynn, the 20 season San Diego Padre, came close in 1994 by hitting .3938, almost reaching an absolute milestone. In 1982, his first season in the Majors, Gwynn appeared in only 58 games. This was the only season in his great career that he batted under .300. 19 consecutive seasons of batting over .300, retired him with an amazing .338 average.
5. Which of the following teams never went to a World Series in the 1980s or 1990s?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The other teams went to at least two, with Atlanta seeing five World Series in the time period. After going to two World Series in the 1970s ('71 and '79), the Pirates went through a dry spell. Although they won three consecutive divisions from 1990-1992, the rest of the century was not nice to them.
6. Which of the following never lost 20 games in a season during their Major League career?

Answer: Bob Gibson

The worst season for the St. Louis Cardinal in losses, was in 1974. Gibson went 11-13 that season. Maroth of the Tigers was 9-21 in 2003, and McLain went 10-22 with the Senators in 1971. Fred Sanford of the 1948 St. Louis Browns was 12-21 for the season.

Zambrano of Tampa Bay hit 20 in 2003, as the Cubs' Kerry Wood hit 21 in the same season. Drysdale hit 20 while playing for the Dodgers in 1961.
8. Which of the following never threw 300 strikeouts in a season?

Answer: Babe Ruth

In 1916 with the Red Sox, pitcher Babe Ruth threw 170 strikeouts for a career high. He also won 23 games in the season, finishing third behind Walter Johnson of the Senators, and the Yankees' Bob Shawkey. Ryan topped out at 383, with Koufax at 382, and Johnson at 372 in 2001.
9. Which of the following never stole 100 bases in a season?

Answer: Ty Cobb

The 'Georgia Peach' set his record in 1915 with 96. Wills of the Dodgers broke Cobb's record in 1962, by being the first ever to reach the 100 milestone with 104. In 1974, Lou Brock of the Cardinals surpassed Wills' record with 118. Henderson broke Brock's record in 1982 by stealing 130.

Henderson did this with the Oakland Athletics, and was a record that stood throughout the 20th century.
10. I wanted to be, I thought that I was good enough, however, I was never a Manager of the Year. Who am I?
