Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Marciano was born Rocco Marchegiano in Brockton Mass. on September 1st of what year?

Answer: 1923

It's only appropriate that Marciano, possibly the hardest working fighter of all time, was born around Labor Day.
2. Rocky was always a tough guy, so he decided to try boxing as a way out of his lower class upbringing. His first official amateur fight was against a former Golden Gloves champion, Henry Lester. How did this fight end?

Answer: Lester wins by disqualification

Rocky was a heavy smoker when he started fighting, and after three rounds with Lester was badly winded and knew he couldn't win. He ended up kneeing Lester in the groin to stop him from punching him anymore and lost by disqualification.
3. Rocky's mother was dead set against her son becoming a boxer. For a short time early in his career, how did he disguise his roadwork from her to keep her from knowing he was fighting?

Answer: He always ran with a football, claiming to want to be a running back

Marciano generally ran with a training partner, and they would toss the football back and forth when anyone was around in case word got back to his mother.
4. Marciano was a very small man for a heavyweight, standing somewhere between 5'10' and 5'11'. How much did he weigh when he turned pro as a heavyweight in 1947?

Answer: 185 lbs.

Rocky ran in heavy shoes and used 300 pound heavybags to build up his strength so that he would be strong enough to manhandle his often much larger opponents.
5. The closest Rocky ever came to losing a fight was against Roland LaStarza, who was also undefeated at the time. A master boxer, LaStarza was able to jab and avoid punches long enough to last the ten round bout. Rocky would be awarded a controvertial split-decision victory. What year did this occur?

Answer: 1950

LaStarza always claimed that he should have won the fight, so after Rocky won the title he gave LaStarza a rematch. That fight would end in a tenth round knockout, after which LaStarza had to have an operation to remove bone fragments from his forearms and elbows from the beating he took trying to cover up from Rocky's punches.
6. Rocky would later claim that the hardest fight of his career was against a personal hero of his, that he desperately did not want to fight. He did fight him though, and knocked him out in the eighth round. Who was this hero of Rocky's?

Answer: Joe Louis

Louis was on the comeback trail, and Marciano had to fight him to get his title shot. Rocky talked at length before the fight about how little he wanted to fight Joe, but when it came down to winning or losing, he knocked the great former champion out.
7. Marciano had devastating power with either hand, but his most powerful punch was his right cross. He was so fond of this punch that he gave it a pet name. What was this pet name?

Answer: Susie-Q

Susie-Q put many men away over the eight years of Rocky's professional career.
8. When Marciano finally got his title shot, it was against 38 year-old Jersey Joe Walcott. Rocky was miles behind on points (many say he'd won only one round) when he knocked Walcott out to become heavyweight champion. In what round did he knock Jersey Joe out?

Answer: 13th

Rocky finally caught the fleet-footed champion against the ropes and nailed him with a perfect right cross. It is considered the ultimate one-punch knockout in boxing history. Walcott was counted out, and it took several minutes for his handlers to wake him up.
9. Since their title fight had been so memorable, Marciano agreed to give Jersey Joe Walcott a rematch as his first title defence. How did their second fight end?

Answer: Marciano wins by KO in the 1st

The rematch was no contest, as Rocky swarmed Walcott with flurries of punches and knocked him out in the first round.
10. In all of Marciano's title defences, only one man was able to go the fifteen round distance with him. Who was it?

Answer: Ezzard Charles

Ezzard Charles was able to last the 15 rounds, and lost a unanimous decision. This fight and the rematch, Rocky later admitted, were the hardest fights of his career.
11. In a rematch with the only fighter that had been able to go the 15 round distance against him, Rocky won in a ninth round knockout. He was badly hurt in this fight however, and was barely able to last long enough to win. How was he hurt?

Answer: A cut on his nose

Ezzard Charles had literally split Rocky's nose with an elbow in the 7th round. Rocky's cornermen told him before the 9th round, 'Get him now or you'll bleed to death.'
12. How many times did Marciano defend the heavyweight title before his retirement?

Answer: Six

Rocky defended the title six times (rematch with Walcott, twice against Ezzard Charles, and once against Roland LaStarza, Dan Cockell and Archie Moore).
13. The last man to fight Rocky Marciano was Archie Moore, who admitted after the fight that Rocky hit hard, but it was the number of punches and relentlessness of the man that made him so hard to beat. What exactly did Moore describe Marciano as?

Answer: A bull with gloves on

Moore was actually able to floor Marciano early in the fight, but after Rocky got up and Archie moved in for the kill, he was met with dozens of punches thrown from every angle. Although he continued to give Rocky a great fight, he was eventually knocked out in the ninth round.
14. 'The Ring' magazine selects a standout boxer as their Fighter of the Year every year. Marciano won this award three times, in 1952, 1954 and 1955. Who won this award in 1953 (the only year from '52 to '55 that Rocky didn't win)?

Answer: Bobo Olson

Rocky didn't win the award in 1953 despite memorable rematches against Joe Walcott and Roland LaStarza. Strangely though, Olsen is not exactly a name that went down in boxing history....
15. Marciano finished his career with a 49 wins and no losses. Of his 49 wins, how many knockouts did he record?

Answer: 43

Marciano has the highest knockout percentage of any heavyweight champion in history with 88 percent, as 43 of his 49 fights ended in a knockout.
16. Marciano was a fast starter that wanted to knock out his opponents as fast as possible. How many first round knockouts did he record in his career?

Answer: 11

Marciano knocked out 11 men in the first round including Joe Walcott, but the majority of these came early in his career. In fact, seven of his first eight fights ended in first round knockouts.
17. Rocky retired a very rich man, especially considering the time (1955). To the nearest ten thousand dollars, what was the biggest purse he ever earned for a single fight?

Answer: {$950} 000

Marciano made {$948} 117 for his defense of the title against Archie Moore in September of 1955. This was almost twice as much as the previous largest purse he'd earned before {($540} 000 for his second fight against Joe Walcott).
18. After years of retirement, Rocky fought a 'computer' fight against Muhammed Ali in 1969. The two men fought 70 one-minute choreographed rounds showing every possible outcome (Ali KO and decision, Marciano KO and decision), and a computer decided, based on their strengths and weaknesses, what the outcome would be. How did this computer fight end?

Answer: Marciano wins by KO

The computer determined that Marciano would KO Ali in the 13th round. Marciano trained very hard for the filming, losing almost 50 pounds and getting a toupee to hide his baldness. Legend has it that Ali kept knocking the wig off during the fight sequences and Rocky got mad and hit Ali with a right hook to the ribs that floored him. How true this is, only the people that were present know for sure...
19. Who is the only man that fought both Rocky Marciano and Muhammed Ali in professional fights?

Answer: Archie Moore

Moore is the only man who fought both of these great champions, getting knocked out by Rocky in the ninth round, and seven years later was knocked out in the fourth by Ali.
20. On August 31, 1969 Rocky Marciano died while on his way home to celebrate his 46th birthday with his family. How did he die?

Answer: Plane crash

Marciano's plane, en route from Chicago to Des Moines, crashed just south of Newton, Iowa. The visibility was bad and the pilot was not instrument rated, and as they came in for what they thought was an emergency landing at Newton's airport, they hit an oak tree in a corn field and all aboard were killed.
