Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Prior to the 2010 Winter Olympics, no Canadian athlete had won an Olympic gold medal on Canadian soil, not at 1976 Summer Games in Montreal, and not at the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary. Who broke this curse and won the first gold medal on home turf?

Answer: Alexandre Bilodeau

Alexandre Bilodeau won a gold medal in the men's moguls event on February 14, becoming the first Canadian gold medallist at a Canadian-hosted Olympics.

Jenn Heil, a gold medalist in Torino in 2006, won silver in 2010 in women's moguls. Kristina Groves and Clara Hughes both won bronze medals in women's speed skating, with Groves also winning a silver.
2. Who was the Canadian figure skater who skated her way to a bronze medal just days after her mother died?

Answer: Joannie Rochette

Joannie Rochette's mother died early in the morning on Sunday February 21 in a Vancouver hospital. Joannie skated in the women's short program two days later on Tuesday night, and stood in third place going into the free skate event the following Thursday. She stayed in third place and won a bronze medal behind South Korea's Kim Yu-Na and Japan's Mao Asada. Joannie Rochette was selected to carry the Canadian flag at the Games' closing ceremony.

Cynthia Phaneuf also skated in women's figure skating for Canada, but placed well out of medal contention. Rachael Flatt was a figure skating competitor for the United States, and Carolina Kostner for Italy.
3. Which of the following athletes won two gold medals at the 2010 Olympics, either in individual or group events?

Answer: Charles Hamelin

Charles Hamelin, a Canadian speed skater won gold in the short track men's 500 metres event on February 26. On the same day, Hamelin was also part of the gold medal-winning men's 5000 metre relay event in speed skating, along with his brother, François Hamelin, Olivier Jean, Guillame Bastille, and François-Louis Tremblay. François-Louis Tremblay also won an individual medal, a bronze in men's 500 metres.

Marianne St-Gelais won a silver medal in womens' speed skating (500 metres). Christine Nesbitt won a gold medal also in womens' speed skating (1000 metres), and Jon Montgomery won gold in men's skeleton.
4. Which country did the Canadian women's hockey team beat 18-0 in the round robin, breaking the previous record of 16-0 as the most lopsided win?

Answer: Slovakia

Canada's 18-0 victory over Slovakia in Canada's first game of the 2010 Olympics was a record-setter. They broke their own record from the 2006 Torino Games when they beat Italy 16-0. Many of the European countries that excel in men's hockey don't even have women's teams. 2010 was Slovakia's Olympic debut in women's hockey, which hopefully is a sign that women's hockey may be growing in Europe.

After winning the gold medal, the Canadian women's hockey team was criticized in the media for their on-ice postgame party, which the International Olympic Committee dismissed without an investigation, but which led Hockey Canada to issue a public apology. One of the main concerns about this postgame party was that the women were drinking, and some of the teams youngest members were underage.
5. Canada won more Olympic gold medals than any other nation in 2010.

Answer: True

Canada won 14 gold medals in 2010, true to the pre-Olympic campaign of "Own the Podium". Not only did Canada win more golds than any other nation, they also broke Winter Olympic records for most gold medals won by the host nation (previous record 10), as well as most gold medals won by a single nation at one Games (previous record 13).

The United States finished first in the overall medal count with 37 (9 gold), and Canada was third overall with 26 medals in total.
6. In which of these team events did Canada, led by Kevin Martin, win gold?

Answer: Curling

The men's curling competition took place from February 16-27. Canada beat Norway in the final game to take the gold medal. Martin is a veteran Canadian curler, and had previously competed in the 2002 Olympics where he won silver. The 2010 tournament gave him his first gold medal.

In the women's tournament, Canada won a silver medal.
7. Who was the legally blind cross-country skier, who in 2010 was named to both the Olympic team and Paralympic team?

Answer: Brian McKeever

Due to health problems, competitive cross-country skier Brian McKeever began losing his vision at age 19. He competed at both the 2002 and 2006 Paralympics in cross-country skiing and biathlon, and had won a total of four gold medals, two silvers, and a bronze. He was named to the Olympic cross-country team for the 2010 Olympics and was supposed to compete in the men's 50km race, but was replaced on the day of the race with a teammate who had performed well in other events.

Alex Harvey and Chandra Crawford both competed in cross-country skiing for Canada, and Kailie Humphries was a part of the gold-medal winning team in women's two-person bobsleigh.
8. In which event did Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir win a gold medal?

Answer: Ice dancing

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir were the first Canadians (and first North Americans) to win a gold medal in ice dancing. Since its introduction to the Winter Olympics in 1976, ice dancing had been a Soviet/Russian dominated sport before Virtue and Moir won in 2010.

The only other non-Soviet/Russian winners were one British team and one French team. Previously, the best Canada had done in ice dancing was one bronze won by Tracy Wilson and Robert McCall at the 1988 Calgary Games.
9. Veteran athlete Jasey-Jay Anderson finally won his gold medal in 2010 for which sport?

Answer: Snowboarding

34-year old Anderson is a veteran Canadian snowboarder, and has competed in four Olympic games, from 1998 to 2010. Previous to 2010, his best Olympic finish was fifth place in snowboard cross in Torino in 2006. At the Vancouver games, he finished first place in the men's parallel giant slalom on February 27, an event in which he'd placed 20th in 2006.
10. Canadians across the country just about had a collective heart attack when the USA scored a goal against Canada with about 24 seconds to go in the men's gold medal hockey game. In a nail-biter finish, Canada won the gold medal with an overtime goal scored by whom?

Answer: Sidney Crosby

The final game of the men's ice hockey tournament was the final event contested on February 28, the last day of the Games. In a repeat of the 2002 Olympics, Canada met its rival USA in the gold medal game. Canada led 2-0 at one point, but USA's Ryan Kesler scored at the end of the second period to make it 2-1. Canada looked like they were holding on to the lead, and all but had the game and gold won, when Zach Parise scored with seconds left on the clock.

The game went to overtime, and less than eight minutes into the extra period, Canada's golden boy Sidney Crosby scored against US goaltender Ryan Miller to win the gold medal, just months after he won the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
