Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Canada's first gold medal and first silver medal of the Games came on the first day, when Canadian sisters Justine and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe stepped onto the podium together. In what event did the Dufour-Lapointe sisters compete?

Answer: Women's moguls

Justine, the youngest sister, won gold in women's moguls (a freestyle skiing event) and her sister Chloe won the silver in the same event. A third Dufour-Lapointe sister, Maxime (the eldest), also competed in the same event but did not advance to the final round; she placed 12th overall. Hannah Kearney of the USA won the bronze medal in this event; she was the defending champion, having won the gold at the 2010 Games.

At age 19, Justine became the youngest ever gold medallist in freestyle skiing. Canada also got their first bronze medal on day one of the Games. Mark McMorris placed third in men's slopestyle snowboarding.
2. The 2014 Olympics saw the first team figure skating event, in which men's singles, ladies' singles, pairs and ice dancing competitors from ten different countries all skated for a total number of points for their country. What medal did Canada win in the inaugural team figure skating event?

Answer: Silver

The Canadians placed second in the first-ever team event. In the team event, each competitor received a number of points towards the country's overall score by their rank in their own event. For example, each country had a competitor in ladies' short program. The skater who placed first in that portion earned 10 points for her country, the second place earned 9 points and so on. Canada ended up with 65 points overall and earned a silver medal for their team effort. Russia won the gold medal in the team event with 75 points and the USA took bronze with 60 points.

The skaters who contributed to Canada's score were Kaetlyn Osmond, Patrick Chan, Kevin Reynolds, pairs' team Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch, pairs' team Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford, and ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.
3. All four people listed in the answer options were Canadian medallists at the Sochi Games. Which one retained his or her title from the 2010 Vancouver Games, winning gold in the exact same event that he or she won gold in four years earlier?

Answer: Alexandre Bilodeau

Alex Bilodeau was the first Canadian to win a gold medal on home snow during the 2010 Olympics. In 2014 in Sochi, he became the first male Canadian Olympian to defend his title, taking gold a second time in men's moguls in freestyle skiing. The first Canadian female Olympian to repeat her gold medal at two consecutive Olympic games was Catriona Le May Doan, who won gold in women's 500 m speed skating in 1998 and 2002. Alex Bilodeau was also the first ever athlete in freestyle skiing to be a repeat gold medalist.

Bilodeau was not the only Canadian on the podium for men's moguls in 2014. Similar to the Dufour-Lapointe sisters who finished 1-2 in women's moguls on day one, Alexandre Bilodeau and Mikael Kingsbury finished 1-2 for Canada in the men's moguls.

Mike Riddle won silver in men's halfpipe in freestyle skiing, Dominique Maltais won silver in women's snowboard cross and Marie-Eve Drolet was part of the silver-medal winning women's 3000 m relay in short track speed skating.
4. There were a couple events in 2014 that saw two Canadians win medals. In which event did Dara Howell take gold and Kim Lamarre take bronze?

Answer: Slopestyle skiing

These two Canadians won medals in Women's slopestyle, in the freestyle skiing category. Slopestyle, in both skiing and snowboarding, was a new event at the 2014 Olympics. In the qualification round of the women's slopestyle skiing, Dara Howell and Kim Lamarre were ranked first and second, but in the final round American Devin Logan placed between them to take the silver medal.

The overall freestyle skiing category was where Team Canada won the most medals; they earned nine medals total in freestyle skiing - four gold, four silver and a bronze.
5. In addition to skating for Canada in the team figure skating event, which skater also won a silver medal in his or her individual figure skating event?

Answer: Patrick Chan

Patrick Chan won a silver medal in the men's single event. The door was opened to him for a gold when Russian favourite Evgeni Plushenko withdrew from the men's short program shortly before it began, due to an injury. Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan took the men's gold and Denis Ten of Kazakhstan took bronze.

The other choices listed all skated individually for Canada as well, but the highest ranked among them was Kaetlyn Osmond who finished in 13th place in ladies' singles. Gabrielle Daleman, the youngest Canadian athlete overall at the Games, finished in 17th place.

Though not listed here, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir also won an individual silver medal, in ice dancing. They lost gold to Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who the first gold medal ever in ice dancing for the USA.
6. Two Canadians that defended their title from the 2010 Vancouver Games, by winning consecutive gold medals, were Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse. In which event did they win gold?

Answer: Bobsleigh

Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse won gold in two-woman bobsleigh at both the 2010 Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Games in Sochi. They were Canada's only medallists in the bobsleigh events in 2014 and were the first female bobsleigh team ever to defend Olympic gold. Humphries and Moyse were also Canada's flag bearers at the 2014 closing ceremonies.
7. Denny Morrison won two medals for Canada in speed skating. One was a silver in the 1000 m event. Morrison almost didn't even compete in this event, having failed to win his spot in the event after falling at the qualification event. Which Canadian skater gave up his spot in the event to Denny Morrison?

Answer: Gilmore Junio

Junio was reportedly approached by Canada's speed skating association about giving up his spot to Morrison, though the decision in the end was his. After placing only 10th in the 500m competition, Junio decided to let Morrison take his place in the 1000m event. It appeared to be the right decision, as Morrison went on to win the silver medal. Though Junio's decision was generally met with positive reviews, giving him props for taking one for the team, the move also met some criticism and raised questions about the validity of making a last minute switch in competitors.

Denny Morrison also won a bronze medal in the 1500m speed skating event, and competed in the team pursuit in which Canada came in sixth place. Charles Hamelin won a gold for Canada in the short track 1500m event and Charle Cournoyer won bronze in short track 500m. Olivier Jean competed but did not win medals.
8. At every Winter Games except one, since women's ice hockey was added to the Olympic program, Team Canada has met Team USA. This continued in Sochi. Canada completely dominated the USA, winning the gold by a 6-0 decision.

Answer: False

Canada did win the gold medal in women's ice hockey in Sochi, but it was a scrappy, almost miraculous come-from-behind 3-2 win. The Canadians had been down 2-0, but forced the game into overtime, and won Canada's fourth consecutive gold medal in women's hockey. Three of the players - Hayley Wickenheiser, Jayna Hefford and Caroline Ouellette - were members of all four gold medal winning teams, making them the first athletes ever to win four gold medals in Olympic ice hockey.

Women's hockey became an Olympic event in 1998. That first year, USA took home the gold medal, but Canada won in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014. The gold medal game in 2006 was Canada vs. Sweden.
9. Canada won gold medals in both men's and women's curling in 2014.

Answer: True

Canada's men's curling team was led by Brad Jacobs. The men's team beat Great Britain 9-3 in the gold medal game. Great Britain took silver and Sweden won bronze when they defeated China 6-4.

The women's curling team was led by Jennifer Jones, the oldest athlete representing Canada at the Sochi Games. The women beat Team Sweden 6-3 in the gold medal game. Great Britain won the bronze in women's curling, beating Switzerland with a score of 6-5.
10. The highlight of the Winter Olympics is the men's hockey gold medal game (well, it's the highlight for most Canadians, anyway). Canada became the first team to repeat a gold medal win in men's hockey in consecutive Games since the Soviet Union won in 1984 and 1988 (and 1992, but as the unified team of former Soviet republics). Who did Canada beat in the 2014 gold medal game?

Answer: Sweden

The gold medal game in 2014 came down to Canada vs. Sweden. Though a gold medal match up between Canada and the USA is a favourite for viewers in North America, in 2014 the two countries met in the semi-finals. Canada beat the USA 1-0 to send the Americans to play for the bronze medal against Finland; Finland was the winner, by a 5-0 decision. Canada went on to play Sweden, the winners at the 2006 Olympics, for the gold on the final day of the Games. Canada won 3-0.

It was a good game, even if it lacked the dramatics of the overtime win in 2010 (against the USA). Team Sweden took home the silver medal.
