Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first-ever World Series was held in 1903, pitting the Boston Americans against the NL Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Who scored the first RBI in World Series history?

Answer: Honus Wagner

The others did not play in this series, and would not appear in a World Series for another 20+ seasons. Wagner was one of a group of players who defected from the defunct Louisville Colonels in 1899 to join the Pirates in 1900. After a second-place Pirate finish in 1900, they won three consecutive National League pennants. Wagner hit a single in the top of the first inning in the 1903 series, scoring Tommy Leach (another former Louisville player) to take a 1-0 lead over the Americans.

By the time the first inning was over, Pittsburgh had a 4-0 lead.

They won the game 7-3, but would lose the series five games to three.
2. Who was the first-ever team by name to come up empty-handed, and not win even one World Series game when they reached the promised land?

Answer: Tigers

The others would not see a World Series until after 1940. The Tigers met the Cubs in Chicago's second of three consecutive World Series appearances in 1907. While game one was called a 3-3 tie after 12 innings, the Cubs went on to win the next four games. All four Cub starting pitchers won one game each.
3. In 2002, the Anaheim Angels defeated the San Francisco Giants four games to three. It was the Giants franchise's 17th appearance in the promised land. It also left the Giants franchise with one of the worst World Series records in Major League Baseball. What was the Giants' win-loss World Series record after this loss?

Answer: 5 titles, 12 losses

The World Series in 2002 was the Giants' 17th appearance in the promised land, and none of the other options added to 17. After moving from New York to San Francisco in 1958, the Giants were still refused a World Series title for the third time in 2002.

The franchise lost to the Yankees in 1962, 1989 to the Athletics, and in 2002 to the Angels. They were 5-9 in World Series competition while in New York prior to 1958.
4. Which Hall of Fame pitcher set a World Series record by allowing 15 hits in one World Series game?

Answer: Walter Johnson

None of the other Hall of Famers pitched in a World Series. After winning their first World Series crown in 1924, the Washington Senators found themself in the driver seat again in 1925. With their ace on the mound in the name of Walter Johnson, the series went to a seventh game on October 15, 1925. Johnson was literally hammered by the Pirates and their 15 hits, but still threw a complete game.

The Pirates won the game 9-7 along with the series.
5. Which World Series pitcher set a World Series record by pitching 14 innings in one World Series game?

Answer: Babe Ruth

All the other Hall of Famers were not pitchers. Ruth was pitching with the Red Sox in 1916 when they met the Brooklyn Robins in the World Series. The Red Sox and the Babe won game two in the 14th inning 2-1 on a run scoring single by Del Gainer. It was Ruth's only appearance in the 1916 series, having five at-bats and not having even one hit. Ruth took the win for the game, and Boston went on to win the series four games to one.
6. The New York Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2009 World Series. This was the ____th appearance in the World Series for the Yankees.

Answer: 40th

The Yankees' first World Series was in 1921 in a loss to the New York Giants. In their 40th appearance in 2009, they defeated the Phillies four games to two, and left the franchise with a 27-13 series record at that point. All their World Series appearances occurred in 1921-1923, 1926-1928, 1932, 1936-1939, 1941-1943, 1947, 1949-1953, 1955-1958, 1960-1964, 1976-1878, 1980 and 1981, 1996, 1998-2001, 2003, then 2009. Love them or hate them, what a tremendous franchise!
7. In the 1963 World Series which pitted the Dodgers against the Yankees, Dodger pitcher Sandy Koufax started the series and game one off by striking out the first five consecutive batters. This tied a World Series record that was set in the 1940s by which National League pitcher?

Answer: Mort Cooper

The others all played their careers in the American League. Ironically, Cooper set his record against the Yankees also. It was the 1943 World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals on the other side. Although Cooper began the game with five strikeouts, he finished his outing with only six strikeouts.

The Yankees still won that 1943 series game five 2-0, and the series four games to one. With Koufax, it was game one of the series in 1963. He went on to strikeout 15 Yankees in the game, win it 5-2, and the Dodgers won that 1963 World Series four games to none.
8. With World War II looming, baseball needed the fans, and the fans needed baseball even more in the 1940s. Which of the following teams did not come through by making even one World Series appearance in the decade?

Answer: New York Giants

The Browns made their only appearance in the history of their team in 1944 in a loss to the Cardinals. The Reds began the decade with a four games to three crown over the Tigers. The Red Sox showed up for the 1946 World Series in a loss to the Cardinals. The Giants franchise went dry from 1938-1951.
9. With the compliments of Yankee Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, they helped this Chicago Cub pitcher set a World Series record for allowing not only four home runs in a game, but four home runs in his first four innings. Who was this unfortunate Cubs pitcher in 1932?

Answer: Charlie Root

The others were all Cubs pitchers, but weren't born yet. It was game three of the 1932 series, and both Gehrig and Ruth were all over Root by hitting two home runs each. Root lost the game and the series to the Yankees four games to none. Game three of the 1932 World Series was also the game that the Babe 'called his home run shot'.
10. Who was the first player in World Series history to have five hits in one World Series game?

Answer: Paul Molitor

Even with all the home runs hit by Reggie Jackson and Babe Ruth, along with Richardson's 12 RBIs in the 1960 World Series, Molitor came out on top with five hits in the 1982 series in game one. It was game one with the Cardinals going up Molitor and his Brewers.

It was an embarrassing 10-0 loss for the Cardinals, with Brewers pitcher Mike Caldwell throwing a three-hitter. Molitor went 5-for-6 by hitting five singles and having two RBIs in the game.
