Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Reggie Jackson, a.k.a. 'Mr. October', really came through in one particular World Series by hitting five home runs, including three in one game. Which World Series year did this occur?

Answer: 1977

Reggie didn't play in the Major Leagues in the other seasons listed. His three home runs in game six of the 1977 series against the Dodgers, helped the Yankees earn the ring, four games to two. Jackson appeared in five World Series and hit 10 home runs.
2. In 2002, the Anaheim Angels not only appeared in their first World Series, but won it all. Who did they defeat four games to three?

Answer: San Francisco Giants

The Phillies and Giants were the only National League teams listed. Troy Glaus of the Angels was the series MVP. The Giants outscored the Angels in the series, 44 runs to 41.
3. In which decade did the New York Yankees win their first World Series?

Answer: 1920s

The Yankees' first appearance was in 1921 against the New York Giants, but lost even with Babe Ruth on the roster. 1922 displayed the same results in losing to the Giants again. In 1923, with a rookie by the name of Lou Gehrig who didn't play in the series, the Yankees finally became victorious against the Giants with Yankee manager Miller Huggins at the helm.
4. Some might know that the first World Series took place in 1903. Fans saw the American League Boston club defeat the National League Pittsburgh club. What was the name of the Boston team?

Answer: Pilgrims

The others listed were all National League teams, and were all part of the Atlanta Braves' franchise. The AL Boston club began in the American League in 1901 with the Boston Americans name. In 1902 they changed it to the Boston Somersets, then 1903 saw them as the Pilgrims.

The Red Sox name came in 1907. In 1903, the Pilgrims defeated the Pirates in the World Series, five games to three. In a strange note, four players hit at least three triples each in the series, and 25 triples were hit overall including one by pitcher Cy Young.
5. Which player appeared in a record-setting 75 World Series games?

Answer: Yogi Berra

The others appeared in only one World Series. Berra appeared in 14 World Series from 1947-1963, an almost untouchable record created by the dynasty of the Yankees. Yogi won 10 of the series, including his 12 home runs and batting over .400 twice.
6. Which pitcher was the first in history to throw 100 World Series innings?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

The others listed never threw more than 30 innings in the World Series. Mathewson appeared in four World Series for the 1905, 1911, 1912, and 1913 seasons. He pitched in 11 of the games reaching the 100-inning plateau with 101.7. His series win-loss record was 5-5 with only one crown in 1905 against the Athletics.
7. The 2005 World Series Champion Chicago White Sox won their first World Series since 1917. Who was the manager of the White Sox?

Answer: Ozzie Guillen

Guillen was in his second season of managing the White Sox, and also his second season of managing at all. As a player, he played for the White Sox for 13 seasons as a shortstop. In 2005, the White Sox defeated the Astros four games to none. In 1917, Pants Rowland took the White Sox to a four games to two victory over the New York Giants. On one note, Ozzie Osborn was a pitcher for the White Sox in 1975, his only season of baseball.

He had no relation to the rock singer.
8. Reggie Jackson might have been known as 'Mr. October', but which Brooklyn Dodger hit four home runs in two different World Series?

Answer: Duke Snider

The others listed were all career New York Yankees. Snider banged out four in the 1952 series loss to the Yankees, then again in 1955 against the Yankees, this time taking home a pennant. Edwin Donald 'Duke' Snider hit 11 career World Series home runs in his six appearances.
9. The 'Earthquake Series' of 1989 delayed the series for 10 days after a quake of 7.1 hit the bay area of San Francisco. Which two teams were playing in the World Series at the time?

Answer: Oakland Athletics - San Francisco Giants

The other teams had no affiliation with a bay area. The quake hit during game three of the series on October 17, 1989. Game three was resumed on October 27. At the time of the quake, the Athletics had already beaten the Giants by a score of 5-0, then 5-1.

The remaining games were also all Oakland, with scores of 13-7 and 9-6. Oakland pitcher Dave Stewart was the series MVP for his two wins and 14 strikeouts.
10. Cleveland Indian outfielder Elmer Smith in 1920 performed a feat for the first time in World Series history. What did Smith do?

Answer: Hit a grand slam

Smith was an outfielder. His grand slam in game five against the Brooklyn Robins helped the Indians win the series, five games to two. Game five also saw the only two home runs in the series, with pitcher Jim Bagby of the Indians hitting the other one.

The 1920 Indians rostered some future Hall of Fame greats in the names of Stan Covelski, Joe Sewell, Tris Speaker, Burleigh Grimes, Rube Marquard, and Zack Wheat.
