The others never saw a World Series game. Whitey was not that great in the Series. Although he appeared in an amazing 11 World Series, his career record was 10-8. His Series records were:
1-0, 0-1, 2-0, 1-1, 1-1, 0-1, 2-0, 2-0, 1-1, 0-2, and 0-1.

Answer: Red Sox

Well known to Bostonians, 1918 was the last World Series that the Boston Red Sox won in the 20th century. In 2003 they came so close. In 1918, the Red Sox were led by pitchers Carl Mays and Dutch Leonard. They beat the Cubs 4 games to 2.

Answer: Bob Gibson

The Tigers defeated the Gibson-led Cardinals 4 games to 3. Tiger Mickey Lolich won 3 games in the Series, struck out 21, and won the MVP Award. Gibson was the first pitcher to reach the 30 plateau, by striking out 31 batters in the 1964 Series. He topped his own mark in 1968 with 35.
6. In 1914, who was the first team to win a World Series by skunking their opponents 4 games to 0?

Answer: Boston Braves

The others teams did not exist in 1914. The Braves managed by Gene Stallings, skunked the Connie Mack Philadelphia Athletics. The Braves outscored the A's 16 runs to 6 in the entire Series. Hank Gowdy led the Braves by hitting .545 in the winning cause.

Answer: Ron Santo

Santo, the slugging 3rd baseman played his entire career in Chicago. 14 seasons with the Cubs and 1 with the White Sox, he missed the honor of the promised land. Hornsby saw WS action with the 1926 Cardinals, and later with the Cubs. Most remember Gibson's home run shot in the 1988 WS, and Berra played in an amazing 75 World Series games.

Bobby was the only one listed who played in the Series. 1960 pitted the Pirates against the Yankees. The Pirates won 4 games to 3, although the Yankees greatly outscored them. The Series was capped by Bill Mazeroski's bottom of the ninth inning, Series winning home run for Pittsburgh.
9. Who managed the 1980 World Series champions?

Answer: Dallas Green

The others did not manage in 1980. This was Dallas' moment, as he took his Philadelphia Phillies to his only World Series appearance. The Phillies beat the Royals 4 games to 2.

Answer: Best of 9

The first World Series in 1903 was a best of 9 format, as Boston defeated Pittsburgh 5 games to 3. With no World Series in 1904, MLB changed the format to best of 7 in 1905. Baseball tried the best of 9 format again in 1919, 1920, and 1921, but it did not seem to work. In 1922 it was the best of 7 again, and continued throughout the remainder of the 20th century.
