Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 2006 NL team was a division winner, but won the fewest games of any NL division winner by winning only 83. The Detroit Tigers in the American League won 12 more games than them in the season, but it all came down to the World Series. Which team defeated the 2006 Tigers in the World Series?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

All the other teams listed were in the American League. The Cardinals, under four-time Manager of the Year winner Tony LaRussa, led the Cardinals to a series win over the Tigers four games to one, while Cardinal David Eckstein won the World Series MVP award.
2. The New York Yankees went to their first World Series in 1921, but lost to the Giants. The New York Giants defeated them again in the in 1922 series. However, the Yankees stood above everyone else, finally in the 1923 series winning it all against the same Giants. For the Yankees, Joe Dugan and Aaron hit a home run each. Which other Yankee hit three home runs in the series?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Although the others listed were Yankees, none were born yet in the 1920s. Ruth joined the Yankees for the 1920 season from the Red Sox. His 54 home runs in the season almost doubled his own season record of 29 in 1919. In 1921, opening the door for the Yankees' first World Series, the Babe hit 59 but still lost the World Series. 1923 was Lou Gehrig's rookie season, but was not a factor in the Yankees' first series title.
3. Which National League team won the 1901 World Series?

Answer: There was no World Series in 1901

Not only were the others listed American League teams, but they did not exist in 1901. The American League joined the National League in 1901 to create the new Major Leagues. The first World Series were held in 1903, with the Boston American/Pilgrims of the AL, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates of the NL.
4. In 1964, Bob Gibson set a World Series series record by striking out 31 New York Yankees in a series title for his Cardinals. 1968 saw him break his own record by striking out 35 batters in the World Series, but lost to which team?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

None of the other teams existed yet. 1968 was a huge anticipation for all baseball fans, pitting the Cardinals with Bob Gibson, against the 31-6 Denny McLain and the Tigers. The Tigers won the series four games to three, including the game seven win by Tigers' Mickey Lolich, the World Series MVP.
5. The Toronto Blue Jays began their franchise in the 1977 season. They won their first two consecutive World Series in which seasons?

Answer: 1992 and 1993

Under manager Roy Hartsfield, the Blue Jays finished with the worst record in their inagaural season in 1977, but would improve under Bobby Mattick and Bobby Cox throughout the years. In 1989, Cito Gaston would take over the team midseason, then take them all the way to win consecutive World Series against the Braves and Phillies, respectively.
6. Two big World Series guns, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, hit four home runs in a World Series. Ruth was the first in 1926, then Gehrig in 1928. It would not be for another 25 seasons before a player duplicated this feat in a World Series. Not only that, but the same player who did it in 1952, did it again in 1955. Who was this Brooklyn Dodger?

Answer: Duke Snider

The others were never Dodgers. Snider was a Dodger from 1947-1962. He broke into the Major Leagues when teammate Jackie Robinson did. Duke hit 40+ home runs in five consecutive seasons. His four in the 1952 series were for nothing in a four games to three loss to the Yankees, but the 1955 series saw him do it again in a four games to three win over the Yankees this time. Duke Snider was a 1980 Hall of Fame inductee, retiring with 407 home runs over 18 seasons.
7. From 1949-1953, the New York Yankees not only won the American League in each season, but won the World Series for an amazing five straight times. Which team in 1954 prevented the Yankees from winning their sixth American League title, and also went on to lose in the World Series?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The other teams listed played in the National League, but none existed yet in 1953. The Cleveland Indians had a 111-43 record in the 154-game season. The Yankees finished second, eight games back. The Indians were led by an all-star cast of Al Rosen, Larry Doby, Bobby Avila, and pitchers Early Wynn, Bob Lemon, and Bob Feller.

Although huge underdogs, the New York Giants skunked the Indians four games to none.
8. 2004 saw the so-called "Curse of the Bambino" erased when this team, and as a wildcard, went all the way to win the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Which Terry Francona manager-led team was this?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

After many heartbreak decades, the Red Sox finally put away the myth of the selling of Babe Ruth to the Yankees after the 1919 World Series. Not only did they win the World Series in 2004 over the Cardinals, but they skunked the heavily-favored St. Louis team who won 105 games in the season.
9. Which player in history was the first to ever appear in an amazing 75 career World Series games?

Answer: Yogi Berra

The others appeared in "only" 41, but it was Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra who did this throughout 14 World Series from 1947-1963. Berra was a three-time AL MVP, and was in the top-five voting for the award seven times. Yogi's 75 World Series games were all with the Yankees, and resulted in 10 World Series rings against only four losses.
10. The American League's Athletics organization began in 1901 with the new American League. They were the Philadelphia Athletics until 1954, then the Kansas City Athletics until 1967, then the Oakland Athletics who three consecutive World Series in which years?

Answer: 1972-1974

The first two were won in 1972 and 1973 under the management of Dick Williams. After the 1973 season, owner Charles Finley and Williams had a falling out, then Finley hired Alvin Dark. The Athletics still won the World Series against the Dodgers, but Finley still had his miser ways, and later caused a ruckus and departure of numerous star Athletic players.

It would not be until 1988 that the Athletics would see a World Series again, and lost to the Dodgers four games to one.
