We got to learn more about Mr. Eko's life as he was featured in the majority of the flashbacks for this episode. Included in the first flashback was Mr. Eko's childhood where he grew up amongst violence and was forced to kill a young boy. Mr. Eko's life was characterized by constant crime from him and those around him.

In the first scene on the island, Mr. Eko was seen carving a bunch of words on an object and Claire noticed him nearby so she went to talk to him. She asked him what he was writing and he softly responded how he wrote down things he needed to remember. Claire asked Mr. Eko if she could sit down next to him and he told her she could and Claire introduced him to her son, Aaron.

As Claire and Mr. Eko started to talk, she asked him if he was religious and she informed him how Charlie liked to talk about how he wasn't religious but it was strange since he carried around a statue of the Virgin Mary. Mr. Eko asked her to get him the statue and Claire showed him where it was. Mr. Eko broke open the statue and revealed how heroin was concealed in it.

We first saw Locke during the opening credits fixing a door in the hatch and Michael saw him and asked if he was breaking in or out. Locke went off topic and started discussing films and how he enjoyed the silent ones. Michael asked Locke if he was setting a combination to the door and Locke replied that he was since the door was to a room with the guns. Locke did not want just anyone wandering into that room.

Charlie was down by the beach with Jin and he asked Jin if he heard of the Kinks but Jin replied that he had not. Just as Jin and Charlie were enjoying themselves, Mr. Eko stormed towards Charlie and asked him where he found the heroin. Charlie replied it was somewhere in the jungle so Mr. Eko asked Charlie to take him to where he found it. Charlie agreed to take Mr. Eko to the area of the jungle where he got the heroin.

Midway through the episode, we saw Michael and Locke in one section of the island and Locke was instructing him on how to properly shoot objects. Locke gave him careful details about properly using the gun and Michael asked Locke where he learned all this information. Locke said his father used to take him hunting so he acquired his gun skills through that activity.

Midway through the episode, we saw a younger Mr. Eko going up to a church and an older woman was outside selling statues of the Virgin Mary. She asked Mr. Eko to purchase one since the money would be used to fund for vaccines for polio to provide to an entire village. Mr. Eko purchased one statue for the woman.

Midway through the episode, Kate was with Sawyer on the beach and she decided to give him a haircut. While Kate cut his hair, Sawyer asked her to go easy but she informed him how she was not being too rough with him. While Kate cut Sawyer's hair, both Michael and Hurley told him how glad they were he was back safe and sound.

The previous episode ended when Michael used the computer in the hatch and noticed how someone else was on the other line. When he typed his name to the other person, a response that asked, "Dad?" came back. In this episode, Michael asked Kate if he could use the computer in the hatch and she let him have it. Michael began to have a conversation with Walt again but Jack interrupted him. Jack was completely oblivious to Walt being on the other end of the computer conversation.

Charlie and Mr. Eko went walking through the jungle and Charlie remarked how he was lost. Mr. Eko suggested he climb up a tree to get a good view of the island and hope that would help him figure out where he was. As Charlie was in the tree, a rush of black smoke charged at Mr. Eko and Charlie urged him to get out of the way. Mr. Eko stared down the smoke and we saw how it contained flashbacks of Mr. Eko's past.
