Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Colonel Flagg's first name?

Answer: Sam

At the end of "A Smattering of Intelligence" Pratt calls Flagg Sam, and Flagg reacted as if that was his real name.

Given the wide variety of aliases Flagg has used and the vagueness about who he truly works for, Sam may be his true name (but who knows?).

Edward Winter actually started his career in the theater, spending almost a decade there before moving into television. He received two Tony nominations in the 1960s. Much of his early work was in Shakespeare.
2. In "A Smattering of Intelligence," what medical ailment brought Colonel Flagg to the 4077?

Answer: Broken arm

Flagg comes to the 4077 with a broken arm, which Hawkeye puts in a cast. Margaret is impressed by Flagg's physique.

The episode is about a turf war between intelligence agencies. Vinny Pratt is a friend of Trapper's with G-2 (military intelligence). Pratt explains that Flagg is with a rival agency seeking to make a big score before Congress makes appropriations.

Hawkeye and Trapper get in the middle of the farce by faking Frank Burns' personnel file to make him appear to be either a Nazi sympathiser or a Communist.

Since both Pratt and Flagg know the exercise is absurd to begin with, they let Hawkeye and Trapper slide.

"A Smattering of Intelligence" aired on March 2, 1974.
3. What is NOT one of the aliases that Colonel Flagg shows to Henry Blake?

Answer: Major Strauss

Strauss is the alias that Vinny Pratt uses with Henry. Flagg shows Blake ID for Brooks, Carter and Troy as well as Captain Louise Klein, an identity he will be using in Tokyo

Flagg ensures Blake's cooperation by blackmailing him over an affair at a no-tell motel, including pictures.
4. In "Officer of the Day," who does Colonel Flagg take to Seoul?

Answer: Klinger

In Winter's nastiest turn as Flagg, he spends much of the episode pressuring Hawkeye to release a wounded prisoner -- so that Flagg can take him to Seoul and execute him.

Hawkeye resists Flagg, all while dealing with his Officer of the Day duties. In the end, Hawkeye switches out the North Korean with Klinger. "I promised him a trip to Seoul," Hawkeye tells an amused Trapper.

Kim Luck, which is a common name in South Korea, appears several times seeking medical treatment played by different actors.

"Officer of the Day" aired on September 24, 1974
5. In "White Gold," Colonel Flagg shows up at the 4077 to investigate the theft of what medical item?

Answer: Penicillin

Flagg investigates a series of penicillin thefts from MASH units. Klinger manages to capture one of the thieves, who is not prepared to give answers.

Bizarrely, Flagg lets the prisoner escape. The Colonel has been stealing penicillin himself in order to bribe informants.

When the thieves return, they turn out to be front-line medics who need penicillin for patients. Blake promises to give them extra if the 4077 has any.

Hawkeye and Trapper give Flagg a fake appendectomy and steal his penicillin. During the episode, Flagg had been posing as Captain Goldberg, a rabbi.

"White Gold" first aired on March 11, 1975.
6. In "Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler," what word did Sidney Freedman use to describe Colonel Flagg?

Answer: Spooky

"He's what Freud would describe as spooky" declared Sidney.

Flagg threatens to get Sidney thrown out of the military for refusing to sign a loyalty oath. "Where can we go to not sign?" asks BJ. Flagg then calls Freedman very dumb but states "You've met your match in me."

The episode features a bombardier who suffers traumatic amnesia which manifests itself in delusions of being Jesus. Flagg wants to return Chandler to the air while Sidney argues he needs serious counseling.

"Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler" first aired on November 7, 1975.
7. In "The Abduction of Margaret Houlihan," what is the name of the Chinese secret agent Flagg is pretending to be?

Answer: Ling Chow

Flagg claims he is disguised as Ling Chow, a Chinese Communist agent. When Potter describes him as an Italian usher and notes he looks nothing like a Chinese Communist, Flagg replies "Neither would Ling Chow if he were dressed like this " It is almost impossible to argue with logic like that

The episode focuses on the disappearance of Margaret, who was helping a pregnant Korean woman. Frank freaks out as usual and winds up shooting BJ

"The Abduction of Margaret Houlihan" first aired on October 26, 1976.
8. In "The Abduction of Margaret Houlihan," what weather phenomenon does Colonel Flagg compare himself to?

Answer: Wind

"I am the wind" Flagg pompously declares. He insists everyone close their eyes when he leaves. After everyone agrees, we hear a crash.

Hawkeye looks out the window and says "The Wind has broken his leg."

Among the wild information we learn about Flagg is that he was a showgirl in Las Vegas.
9. When Colonel Flagg first shows up at the 4077 in "Rally Round the Flagg, Boys," what card game are they playing?

Answer: Bridge

While poker was a mainstay in M*A*S*H (and even an occasional plot point), bridge was the game of choice in "Rally Around the Flagg."

Hawkeye tells a convoluted story revealing his hand and indicating he is a novice bridge player.

Gin rummy was Winchester's game and he was very good at it. Hawkeye and BJ played go fish on occasion.
10. In "Rally Around the Flagg, Boys," Colonel Flagg returns to investigate what surgeon's operation on a North Korean?

Answer: Hawkeye

"You operated on a yellow ahead of a white American and that makes you pretty pinko", charges Flagg "You're boring even in Technicolor," quips Hawkeye.

Flagg tries to recruit Winchester to spy on Hawkeye, and Winchester quickly realizes Flagg is an idiot. At the end, Flagg tries to arrest the local mayor and chief of police. "Another one of Colonel Flagg's red herrings," says one of the MPs.

"Rally Around the Flagg Boys" first aired on September 10, 1979. Harry Morgan directed the episode.

Winter made a final appearance as Flagg on "After MASH" in October 1984. The sequel started Harry Morgan, Jamie Farr, and William Christopher. Flagg testified at Klinger's assault trial and was even more over the top than usual.
