Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pullo prayed to the Gods to open the door of his cell. What did he first offer?

Answer: kill a white lamb

If he couldn't find one, he promised six pigeons. That's when Vorenus entered the cell - releasing Pullo to work with Vorenus to retrieve the eagle.
2. Why did Vorenus say he chose Pullo to find the eagle?

Answer: Pullo had nothing to lose

Vorenus actually disliked Pullo and thought he was a drunk. Vorenus thought there was no chance they could find the eagle. If they returned without the eagle, they'd be disgraced. Pullo was chosen because he was sentenced to die in the arena. Therefore, Pullo had nothing to lose.
3. Brutus hates politics. But how long had it been his family's tradition for?

Answer: 500 years

Brutus believed that if the Senate was like the Germans, he would attend. Brutus didn't like the endless debate and speeches.
4. How does Brutus describe Caesar's army to Pompey?

Answer: mutinous

Brutus talked to Pompey about how Caesar's armies just wanted to go home and how Caesar wasn't sure if his men would fight for him any more. Brutus chalked it up to the lower classes and their odd sense of loyalty. Then he quickly realises that Pompey is of the lower classes and starts to backpedal a little.
5. Who does Caesar instruct to find a new wife for Pompey?

Answer: Atia

Caesar wrote several letters that Brutus delivered when he arrived back in Rome. One was for Servilia and mentioned that he longed to be alone with her (and was signed 'with great affection'). A second letter went to Atia. Caesar asked her to find a new wife for Pompey as he (Caesar) wasn't sure who best from the family to suggest. He claimed he would have asked Calpurnia (his wife) but she didn't have an eye for such things.

Atia chose her own daughter, Octavia.
6. How does Atia try to ensure Octavian was safe?

Answer: slaughter a bull

Atia participated in a ritual that culminated in the slaughtering of a bull while she sat under the bull. Covered in blood, she looked at the priest who said no harm would come to Octavian.
7. What was Octavia's husband's name?

Answer: Glabius

Apparently there had been troubles in the past between the two, but they overcame them. Because Atia wanted Octavia to marry Pompey, Octavia would need a divorce. If Caesar had to ask Glabius to divorce her (and Glabius refused) Caesar would be forced to kill Glabius. When Octavia said Caesar would never do such a thing, Atia countered that Caesar had been in Gaul for years...
8. Why was Vorenus allowed to marry Niobe?

Answer: He received a special dispensation

Apparently Centurions weren't allowed to marry. Vorenus told Pullo he hadn't seen Niobe in over seven years. (Vorenus actually knew exactly how long it had been...)

Pullo didn't want to be tied to one woman.
9. What did Pullo make Octavian say before he would cut Octavian's ropes?

Answer: Please

Pullo and Vorenus quickly killed the men who held Octavian. As Pullo removed the teeth from one of the men, Octavian explained he was a Roman citizen of noble birth and told Pullo to cut the ropes. Pullo made Octavian say 'please' before he would do so.
10. Why did Octavian say Caesar didn't care about his eagle?

Answer: It would look symbolic if it remained lost

Octavian ordered Vorenus and Pullo to take him to Caesar's camp. When Octavian was told the pair had to find the eagle first, Octavian told them that Caesar wouldn't pull a hair for his eagle. The loss of the eagle would be symbolic - Pompey would believe that Caesar was weak and would strike first. Caesar didn't want to attack first. Octavian continued that Caesar took Pompey's love from the people and a battle would be inevitable between the pair.
11. What did Vorenus and Pullo find with the eagle?

Answer: Pompey's man

Caesar sent the man's head back to Pompey with a note that Caesar would winter his troops closer to home.
12. Who did Pompey marry?

Answer: Cornelia

Pompey decided that since Caesar was intent on ruining their friendship, he would not marry Octavia. Octavia was upset as she had been disgraced in front of all of Rome and wanted Pompey dead. Octavia asked Atia if perhaps Glabius would take her back, but Atia believed she could find a better husband for Octavia.
13. Why was Servilia upset at Caesar's letter?

Answer: He didn't say he loved her

Caesar signed his letter 'with great affection'. Servilia wanted him to sign it with love, but Sevrilia's slave pointed out that Caesar was a soldier and soldiers aren't very emotional.
14. Did Brutus like Antony?

Answer: No

Brutus wondered how Caesar put up with Antony.
15. How much money did Antony give Vorenus to use to find the eagle?

Answer: 1/4 talent of gold

Antony had asked for 1/2 talent of gold. While explaining the job to Vorenus, Antony split the money in half and told Vorenus he could have 1/4 talent of gold for bribes and such.
