Rome Trivia Questions

1. Vorenus took the head of this man after learning that he had taken his children.

From Quiz
HBO's "Rome"

Answer: Erastes Fulmen

After Vorenus found out Lucius wasn't his son and caused Niobe to commit suicide as a result, he cursed his children to Hades and left. While he was gone, Fulmen came by and collected them along with Niobe's sister Lyde. Fulmen told Vorenus that he "raped them", killed them and threw them in the river. Actually, he sold them into slavery.

2. Pullo prayed to the Gods to open the door of his cell. What did he first offer?

From Quiz "Rome" - "The Stolen Eagle" Part II

Answer: kill a white lamb

If he couldn't find one, he promised six pigeons. That's when Vorenus entered the cell - releasing Pullo to work with Vorenus to retrieve the eagle.

3. At the beginning of the episode, who were the two people who ruled Rome?

From Quiz "Rome" - "The Stolen Eagle" Part I

Answer: Pompey and Caesar

The first voice over states that Pompey and Caesar were the two rulers. Pompey had stayed in Rome to keep the peace while Caesar went off to conquer Gaul.

4. Who is adopted by Julius Caesar in his will?

From Quiz "Rome" Characters

Answer: Octavian

In Caesar's will, he adopts Octavian as his son and wills his estate to Octavian. Although his last name was not Caesar (his mother was the daughter of one of Caesar's sisters), he adopted Caesar as his last name from then on.

5. What was Cleopatra concerned with when selecting a method of suicide?

From Quiz "Rome" - "De Patre Vostro (About Your Father)" 2

Answer: No discoloration

The 'old woman' first offers a liquid that promised to be a quick death. Cleopatra then asked for something that would leave no discoloration or bloating and was offered a snake. The snake would bite either the wrist or breast and would then take 40 breaths for Cleopatra to die. Cleopatra decided to have the snake bite her breast. Octavian the came into the room and Cleopatra had time to tell him what she really thought of him. One of these thoughts was that Octavian's soul was rotten.

6. Who accompanied Octavian to Egypt?

From Quiz "Rome" - "De Patre Vostro (About Your Father)"

Answer: Pullo

Octavian knew that Vorenus was still with Mark Antony. As Pullo was best friends with Vorenus, Octavian decided to bring Pullo along to try and negotiate with Mark Antony. Vorenus and Mark Antony did not accompany Octavian - they were in Egypt already when Octavian arrived.

7. This character was about to kill his wife when she killed herself.

From Quiz "Rome" - Characters

Answer: Lucius Vorenus

Vorenus had just confronted his wife, Niobe, about how she'd had an affair while he was away in Gaul with Caesar. Vorenus had a knife in his hand, ready to kill Niobe when she jumped off the balcony and died.

8. Memmio comes to Vorenus claiming a friend's relative was defiled. Why doesn't Vorenus help?

From Quiz "Rome" - "These Being the Words..."

Answer: The boy was paid for the act

The boy in question had been paid and thus was working as a prostitute, in Vorenus's opinion. Pullo tried to have the men come to an agreement in that he believed the boy was taken advantage of. Memmio claimed that asking Vorenus was only a formality. Vorenus was upset that Pullo questioned Vorenus's authority - especially in front of Memmio, a rival captain. When Vorenus found out that Memmio disobeyed him, Vorenus asked Pullo to show Memmio the same disrespect he'd shown Vorenus. Pullo thought that would start a gang war and still wouldn't bring back Niobe, the children, or Caesar.

9. Why did Pullo's new wife want to leave Vorenus's house?

From Quiz "Rome" - "Son of Hades"

Answer: The house was cursed

She believed that if they stayed and made a baby, it would be a monster. Vorenus was upset because he believed he caused Caesar and Niobe's deaths.

10. This episode surrounds the aftermath of the deaths of what two people?

From Quiz "Rome" - "Passover"

Answer: Caesar and Niobe

Caesar was murdered in the Senate. Vorenus, who had been hired to guard Caesar, was diverted by someone claiming to know information about his wife. Vorenus found out that the little boy, Lucius, was actually his wife's child. When Vorenus went to confront Niobe, he had a knife, intending to kill her. However, Niobe leaped off the balcony and fell onto the ground below.

11. Which character is always seen wearing a black toga?

From Quiz "Rome" Characters

Answer: Cato

Cato always wears a black toga, as it is his way of showing how he is in mourning for the Republic. Out of all the characters on the series, Cato is the staunchest supporter of the Republic and all that it stands for.

12. Who is in mourning at the beginning of this episode?

From Quiz "Rome" - "Death Mask"

Answer: Servilia

Brutus was killed in the previous episode at the Battle of Philippi. Servilia is weeping over a mask in the likeness of her son and although she is exhausted, she vows never to sleep again.

13. Who is Magnus Pompey married to when the series begins?

From Quiz HBO's "Rome"

Answer: Julius Caesar's daughter, Julia

Caesar's daughter dies in childbirth in the opening scene of "Rome", leaving Pompey a widower. Eager to keep good relations intact, Caesar tries to find Pompey another wife and Caesar's niece, Atia, offers her daughter, Octavia, to him. Octavia is less than thrilled with this arrangement since she is in love with another man. Pompey eventually realizes that his marrying a relative of Caesar would be politically beneficial only to Caesar, so Pompey chooses another wife not of relation to Caesar or Atia.

14. At the beginning of the episode, whom is Atia whipping?

From Quiz "Rome" - "An Owl in a Thornbush"

Answer: Castor

Atia is whipping Castor, her head slave, not because of anything that he has done, but out of frustration with the situation with Caesar. Eleni is Servilia's body slave and Merula is Atia's body slave.

15. What song does the slave girl, Althea, sing for Atia?

From Quiz "Rome" - "Testudo et Lepus"

Answer: Crown of Sappho

Althea ends up singing as there are no other music players available. Though Althea's main job is kitchen slave, she has a lovely voice. "Song of Seikilos" was an actual song, "Birth of Venus" is a fabricated one, and "Janus Breaks" is a song from the soundtrack of the Rome series that plays during the party scene in "Stealing from Saturn."

16. What's the name of Pompey's son, who is introduced in this episode for the first time?

From Quiz "Rome" - "Stealing From Saturn"

Answer: Quintus Pompey

Quintus Pompey did not historically exist, although he is most likely an amalgam of several of Pompey Magnus's actual sons. Quintus Pompey is a violent and bloodthirsty character, adept at torture.

17. Early in the series, Pullo and Vorenus are fighting with Caesar in Gaul. What was the battle?

From Quiz HBO's "Rome"

Answer: Alesia

It was the final defeat of the Gauls and Vercingetorix. There were roughly 30 miles of breastworks built to wall in Vercingetorix and wall out other Galic armies.

18. Why did Vorenus say he chose Pullo to find the eagle?

From Quiz "Rome" - "The Stolen Eagle" Part II

Answer: Pullo had nothing to lose

Vorenus actually disliked Pullo and thought he was a drunk. Vorenus thought there was no chance they could find the eagle. If they returned without the eagle, they'd be disgraced. Pullo was chosen because he was sentenced to die in the arena. Therefore, Pullo had nothing to lose.

19. What do we see was Pullo's punishment for breaking formation?

From Quiz "Rome" - "The Stolen Eagle" Part I

Answer: Whipped

Pullo was whipped for breaking formation in the previous scene. Vorenus tells the soldiers watching Pullo be whipped that traitors would be crucified.

20. This person was both Mark Antony and Julius Caesar's lover.

From Quiz "Rome" Characters

Answer: Cleopatra

Calpurnia was Caesar's wife. Servilia was Caesar's lover. Although she was put under Mark Antony's 'protection' after Brutus fled the city, there was never any suggestion that she and he were lovers. Atia was Caesar's niece and Antony's lover. Although she encouraged her son, Octavian, to become Caesar's lover, she never was Caesar's lover.

21. Who finds the photograph of Niobe?

From Quiz "Rome" - "De Patre Vostro (About Your Father)" 2

Answer: Pullo

After Cleopatra dies, Pullo looks through some articles left near Mark Antony's body. One of these articles was a drawing of Niobe in a case. Pullo then realizes what Vorenus had done and went off in search of Vorenus and Caesarion.

22. While negotiating with Octavian, what was one of Mark Antony's offers?

From Quiz "Rome" - "De Patre Vostro (About Your Father)"

Answer: Live in Egypt as a private citizen

Mark Antony offered to leave all politics, but Octavian flat-out refused the offer and again proposed the previous terms. Mark Antony was insulted and then offered a duel between Mark Antony and Octavian - man to man. Mark Antony believed Octavian couldn't refuse (or else he'd be labeled a coward), but Octavian did refuse, perhaps because Octavian's messenger let Octavian know that Mark Antony was not lucid.

23. Name of the slave freed in Julius Caesar's will.

From Quiz "Rome" - Characters

Answer: Posca

Posca was Caesar's slave. Posca was given his freedom in Caesar's will. Posca then worked for Antony. While working for Antony, Posca showed that he would do things such as accept bribes to get more money. In addition, when Antony took a 'gift' from Herod and didn't tell Octavian, Posca sent word to Octavian that Antony had lied. Posca did go with Antony to Egypt and returned on the ship carrying Atia and Octavia.

24. What drug was Octavia seen indulging in?

From Quiz "Rome" - "These Being the Words..."

Answer: Marijuana

Octavia's friend Jocasta was getting Octavia to smoke some hemp. Apparently the Macedonia hemp was better. Jocasta was a tradesman's daughter, but Atia claimed it was all right as long as Octavia didn't bring in actors or the such. Octavia told Jocasta that Atia had been in a funk since Octavian left.

25. How did Antony describe Cleopatra?

From Quiz "Rome" - "Son of Hades"

Answer: skinny

Atia was jealous because she didn't want Antony making love to women who were higher (in society) than herself. Antony claimed it was because Cleopatra was younger than Atia. Atia said she didn't mind Antony's whores, but Cleopatra did make her jealous.

26. At first, what did Mark Antony intend to do after finding out Caesar was murdered?

From Quiz "Rome" - "Passover"

Answer: Go North and raise an army

At first, Atia didn't know if Mark Antony was alive or dead. Atia's first instinct was to assume the worst and leave the city, for their own protection. Antony came to the house after running for his life (he was unarmed and men were attempting to kill him). He told Atia he will go North and raise an army to avenge Caesar's death. He added that Atia may do as she pleases. Atia took offense to this and accused him of arranging for his prostitutes' safety before her. Antony attempted to calm her, telling her he didn't mean it that way - he meant that he couldn't force her to do anything. Atia decided her family will go with Antony. Antony decided they will stop and get Calpurnia, Caesar's wife, because it would look bad if they left her in the city.

27. Which character was away for years fighting in Gaul while his wife was having an affair with another man?

From Quiz "Rome" Characters

Answer: Vorenus

While three of these characters were in Gaul (Vorenus, Pullo and Antony), only one of them is married to a woman who was having an affair. Vorenus's wife, Niobe, had an affair with Evander, her brother-in-law, while her husband was in Gaul.

28. Which characters get married in "Death Mask"?

From Quiz "Rome" - "Death Mask"

Answer: Jocasta and Octavia

Jocasta, whose family was killed under Atia's command, is arranged to marry Posca and Octavia marries Mark Anthony. Jocasta is now penniless and orphaned and has little choice but to follow through with the arrangement made by Atia. She sobs while preparing for the ceremony and has a general look of shock during it. Octavia's marriage to Mark Antony is arranged by her brother, Octavian Caesar. She has a better chance of producing a child than Atia, even though Atia and Mark Antony have been lovers for years. A marriage between the families will also show the public that they are united. Octavia looks despondent throughout the ceremony as her lover, Agrippa, watches her wed Mark Antony.

29. Why does Servillia curse Atia?

From Quiz HBO's "Rome"

Answer: Atia interfered with Servillia's affair with Caesar

In episode five, "The Ram Has Touched The Wall", Atia thinks that her son, Octavian, has become lovers with Caesar. She also knows that Caesar has been carrying on a long-time affair with Servillia of the Junii and deeply loves her. Because Atia doesn't want to risk her son's status in Caesar's eyes, she launches a smear campaign around Rome with obscene graffiti depicting Caesar and Servillia together. Caesar's wife becomes enraged when she sees this graffiti and demands Caesar stop seeing Servillia. When Caesar meets with Servillia to end their relationship, things get heated and Caesar strikes her. Servillia is both ashamed and angry and puts a curse on Atia and Caesar.

30. What are Jocasta and Octavia smoking in this episode?

From Quiz "Rome" - "These Being the Words of..."

Answer: Hemp

Jocasta is Octavia's new friend, the daughter of a rich businessman. Atia does not approve of the friendship, and she is not happy that her daughter is smoking hemp in the house, as it makes the whole place smell. She does, however, smoke some hemp with them, while conversing with Jocasta about Macedonia.
