Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's the name of Pompey's son, who is introduced in this episode for the first time?

Answer: Quintus Pompey

Quintus Pompey did not historically exist, although he is most likely an amalgam of several of Pompey Magnus's actual sons. Quintus Pompey is a violent and bloodthirsty character, adept at torture.
2. Which of these gods does Vorenus pray to before his feast?

Answer: Janus

Vorenus and his family pray to Janus, the god of doorways and of beginnings. They pray so that Vorenus' grocery business will have an auspicious beginning.

Interestingly enough, Brutus also prays to Janus in the third episode of the second season, "These Being the Words of Marcus Tullius Cicero."
3. According to Posca, which of these food items must not be served at Atia's dinner?

Answer: Shellfish

Posca goes to Castor, Atia's head slave, to help him prepare for the party. He instructs Castor that Caesar has told him that shellfish is not to be served at the party.

Atia mentions that the lampreys must not be over cooked. According to her, they must be cooked long enough to kill them, no longer. Dormouse was a common Roman specialty.
4. Which of these conditions does Posca claim that Caesar suffers from?

Answer: Morbus comitialis

Morbus comitialis is simply another word for epilepsy. According to Posca, "no one will follow a man Apollo has cursed with the morbus." Alexander the Great and Caligula were also said to have suffered from epilepsy.

The condition was also known as morbus caducus--or the falling disease. Morbus comitialis means disease of the assembly hall, because if anyone had an epileptic attack in the assembly hall, it had to be closed down and purified.
5. At Atia's party, which character do Caesar and Antony bribe?

Answer: The Chief Auger

Early on in the episode, Caesar enters the temple, saying that he cannot enter the city as a dictator unless the auspices are good. As he says, "the Gods know that my intentions are peaceful. The people must know it also." He and Antony offer the Chief Auger money in exchange for a good omen.
6. Why does Vorenus say that Lyde and Evander must never come to their house again?

Answer: They get into a scuffle and knock over the shrine to Janus

It is in this episode that it is revealed that the man that Niobe has been having an affair with in Vorenus' absence is also her brother-in-law (the wife of her sister, Lyde).

When Lyde begins dancing with another man and threatening to tell Vorenus the truth about Evander and Niobe's relationship, Evander and Niobe try to get her out of the party as quietly as possible. In the resulting scuffle, Evander and Lyde accidentally knock over the shrine to Janus--something that symbolizes bad luck and a terrible beginning to Vorenus' new business venture.
7. Which of these characters is conspicuously absent from Atia's party?

Answer: Brutus

Servilia, Calpurnia, and Octavia are all present at the party. However, Brutus has left the city along with Pompey and his followers, as he believes that Caesar's cause is wrong.

Because Caesar was such a dear friend to both Servilia and Brutus, Brutus's absence is a slightly uncomfortable topic. Servilia apologizes for Brutus's absence.
8. What is Caesar's real reason for leaving Calpurnia after the two of them have already left Atia's party?

Answer: He is visiting Servilia

Pullo has already shown up with Quintus Pompey in tow, and news of the gold as well. Caesar claims that he has business to conduct, which Calpurnia finds a bit odd, as it is after dark.

In real life, Servilia was said to be the woman that Caesar loved the most. His seeing her on the show is in keeping with what we know of history.
9. What does Caesar tell Antony after Pullo has left them?

Answer: Never to question him in front of their enemies

Antony questions Caesar's decision to offer a truce to Pompey and the others. However, he questions Caesar's decision in front of one of their enemies, Quintus Pompey.

As Octavian points out later, Caesar's decision does make sense. He offers truce on conditions that the Senate will be able to accept, but on terms that Pompey will be unwilling to accept--thus causing a rift in the faction.
10. Other than Posca, who else witnesses Caesar's epileptic attack?

Answer: Octavian

When Caesar is talking politics with Octavian, he feels an attack coming on. Octavian rushes Posca and Caesar to a safe, private, room near the kitchen so that no one else will see them.
