Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Beckett Mariner, the chaotic ensign/lieutenant j.g. who is the star of the show had which secret that she kept until Boimler accidentally revealed it to the crew?

Answer: her mother is the Cerritos's captain and her father is a Starfleet admiral

Boimler finds out that Mariner is Capt. Freeman's daughter (a fact that the viewers found out in the first episode) when he created a holodeck simulation of the Cerritos and the crew. He made it very accurate by having the computer base the characters off of the crew's personal logs. This undoubtedly gathered the information about the mother-daughter relationship. He was initially freaked out learning this fact. But when they were on planet Beta III, he admitted to her that he found out her secret. But he didn't realize that his comm badge was activated and the whole bridge crew overheard the secret.

Boimler's revelation, which was overheard by the bridge crew:
Boimler: "Look. If you have to know, I found out about your secret.... Captain Freeman is your mom."
Mariner: [angrily] "Yeah, I don't, I don't know what you're talking about."
Boimler: "Oh, come on, Mariner. The captain's your mom. Your dad's an admiral. You're basically Starfleet royalty. How cool is that?"

(Episodes: "Second Contact", "Crisis Point", "No Small Parts")
2. Bradward "Brad" Boimler, the neurotic ensign/lieutenant j.g. who Mariner "mentors" with her chaotic teachings, grew up on a vineyard in Modesto, California. What was the end-product of the Boimler family's produce?

Answer: raisins

Boimler goes back to his family vineyard when he's on leave after Capt. Freeman was framed and arrested for bombing the Packled home planet. As he's working there, he is oblivious to the female workers' sexual overtures.

Mariner and Boimler discussing his family's business:
Mariner: "When you said your family had vineyards, I just assumed it was for for wine."
Boimler: "Oh, I wish! No. We Boimlers dry grapes. Just dry 'em, and dry 'em, and dry 'em 'til they're all shrivelled and hopeless and stuck on Earth forever."

Boimlers' female employees (unsuccessfully) flirting with Brad:
Genevive: "Hey, Bradward. Want to test the sweetness of my bushel?"
Boimler: "Ugh, fine, Genevive. (tasting grapes) Just... give it 43 more sun-hours at 21 degrees brix."
Genevive (sadly): "Oh, Ok..."

Mandolina: "Bradward, all these varietals are so confusing. Take me to the privacy of the pickery shed and explain them to me."
Boimler: "C'mon, Mandolina. Red goes in the red bucket, and white goes in the white. You know that."
Mandolina (disappointedly): "Aw..."

Lianne: Bradward! "I'm soaked in juice and I need help getting naked."
Boimler: "Just spray off with the hose, Liane."
Lianne (disappointedly): "Hmph!"

(episode "Grounded")
3. Samanthan Rutherford, a cheerful engineering ensign/lieutenant j.g. has a cranial implant that helps him acquire new skills when needed, scans like a tricorder, and helps him remember with total recall. What is the dark secret behind his implant?

Answer: it was implanted to hide his memories of a secret Starfleet project

Rutherford is said to have had the implant installed electively, but the truth was far darker. He was an engineer working on the Texas-class automated starship project, under Admiral Les Buenamigo. Through a accident, Rutherford was critically injured. Buenamigo ordered that Rutherford be fitted with the cranial implant. With the implant, he had it programmed so that Rutherford wouldn't remember working on the Texas-class project. However, bits of Rutherford's memories came to his attention: he vaguely remembered the surgery and unknown figures around him; he started liking pears, when he hadn't before; and he programmed a holographic helper name Badgey that used programming similar to what he'd been programming the Texas-class ships with.

Mariner is surprised that Rutherford is keeping his cranial implant.
Mariner: "After all that, you're keeping the implant?"
Rutherford (darkly): "It robbed me of my memories and was used to cover-up deadly crimes..." (cheerfully) "But it's so cool! I'm still finding submenus I didn't know were in there!"

(episodes "Terminal Provocations", "Strange Energies", "The Stars At Night")
4. D'vana Tendi, the optimistic Orion ensign/lieutenant j.g. has a secret that started to be reveal when Mariner learned her title from her life on Orion. What was that title?

Answer: Mistress of the Winter Constellations

Tendi was on a away mission for Dr. T'Ana with Mariner, retrieving a family heirloom. They accidentally broke it, and were trying to get someone to fix it before they returned to the Cerritos. After one failed attempt by Mariner, Tendi decided to visit her cousin D'Onni, who worked on making forgeries of art items. When they went to his shop on an Orion pirate outpost, D'Onni was immediately subservient to Tendi, referring to her as "Mistress of the Winter Constellations". This was the beginning of Mariner finding out more about Tendi's past: that Tendi came from a crime syndicate family, and that she was trained as an assassin. But Tendi secretly loved science, and left the family to apply to Starfleet to become a science officer.

Tendi and Meriner open up about why they don't know each other better:
Mariner: "Sorry you brought me instead of Rutherford, but don't feel bad you don't know much about my life. I keep it vague on purpose."
Tendi: "Why?"
Marainer: "Every time I open up, people get promoted and take off. It's better to just keep it surface level and never have friends instead of always losing them."
Tandi: "Well, don't apologize. I was hoping this trip would be a way for us to bond, but it's just been a big mess. And the reason you don't know much about me, that's my fault. I'm always so busy making everyone else happy that I never open up. Now you know more about me than Rutherford does."

(episode "We'll Always Have Tom Paris")
5. Lieutenant Andy Billups, the Cerritos's chief engineer, grew up on the planet Hysperia. He has which hidden secret from his planet that few knew about?

Answer: he is heir apparent to the throne

Andarithio (not Andrew) Billups is the son of Queen Paolana and the late King Billups of the planet Hysperia.

Hysperia was colonized by Renaissance-fair enthusiasts, and they maintain a culture based on the cosplay of contemporary Renaissance fairs. Even though Andy Billups abdicated his birthright when he left the planet to join Starfleet, he still is bound by one custom: if he loses his virginity, he must become king.

His mother is constantly scheming to hook him up, so that he'll return to be king. She even went so far as to fake her own death, so that he felt guilt-ridden to become king. He was about to "seal the deal" with a couple of royal guards (both female and male), when Rutherford discovered the Queen's plans and comes to his "rescue" so that Billups retains his virginity.

(episode "Where Pleasant Fountains Lie")
6. Carol Freeman, captain of the Cerritos, has which food allergy?

Answer: chocolate

This secret was revealed when Boimler made a holographic simulation of the Cerritos's crew by tapping into their personal logs. Freeman must've mentioned her allergy in her logs. When Boimler tried to offer holographic Freeman chocolate chip cookies, holographic Ensign Jet Manhaver tackled Boimler and threw him off a cliff. (The simulation had over-simulated. Perhaps Jet had logged that he'd kill to protect the captain, and the computer took this too literally.)

(episode "Crisis Point")
7. Dr. T'Ana, the chief medical officer and a commander on the Cerritos, once had Ensign Tendi go on a mission to retrieve a family heirloom. What was the heirloom?

Answer: a Caitian libido post

Dr. T'Ana sent Tendi on a mission to retrieve a family heirloom that was in storage on Qualor II. When Tendi and Mariner got it from the storage facility, it came in a big wooden box. Out of curiosity, they opened the coffin-sized box to find a wooden figure that vaguely looked like a large humanoid cat, similar to the stature of Caitians. Mariner then realized that this was a Caitian libido post, an object that Caitians used to quell their yearly sexual urges.

Mariner freaks and accidentally drops it, and it breaks. Mariner and Tendi then have a couple of adventures trying to find someone who can fix it before returning to the Cerritos. When they fail at getting it repaired, Tendi resigns herself to apologizing to Dr. T'Ana for breaking the libido post. Mariner has another idea, though. She sets their shuttle to "ramming speed" to run into the Cerritos. They bump into the deflector shields, causing no damage to the Cerritos. However, the shuttle and its contents get shaken around quite a bit. This gives Tendi an excuse to give T'Ana as to why her libido post is broken.

It turns out that T'Ana didn't care about the post; it was the box she wanted. She takes it into her office. Much like Earth cats love to climb into boxes, she climbs in and nestles, purring.

(episode, "We'll Always Have Tom Paris")
8. A moopsy is a cute little all-white quadriped that walks with a waddle and vocalizes with a squeaky cry of "moopsy". What is the insidious secret of the cute little moopsy?

Answer: it will drink your bones

Ransom, Mariner, and Ensign Gary go to an alien menagerie to retrieve two Humans who were on display there. (The curator, Narj (who is a humanoid tree-like being), has trouble distinguishing animal humanoids.) They all walk past several displays, including the cute little moopsy, who is in a cell right next to the humans.

As Narj is getting ready to release the humans, he hears a call of "moopsy". He does a double-take when he realizes the moopsy is free. He freaks out, because he knows the danger of the moopsy, that it will attack creatures with skeletons and "drink" them. Questioning how this is possible, they watch as the moopsy crawls through a vent into vicious swamp gobblers' cage. Once in, the gobblers are cringing with fear as the moopsy jumps on one gobbler's back, bites it with previously hidden fangs, then proceeds to somehow liquify the gobbler's bones and drink them. As the away team and Narj run out of the hall in fear, the moopsy drinks a second gobbler's bones, then waddles back into the museum hall and calls out cutely: "moopsy!"

The conversation when Narj realizes the moopsy is free:
Jack Ransom: "I know you're taking a hit losing these guys. We appreciate your positive attitude."
Narj: "Not to worry. My real moneymakers are the Pyrithian Swamp Gobblers."
[Narj indicates the Pyrithian Swamp Gobblers' cage holding two terrifying-looking beasts with large teeth and screeching roars]
Moopsy: [camera pans down to reveal a moopsy, a cute little creature outside the Pyrithian Swamp Gobblers' cage. A Pyrithian Swamp Gobbler sees the moopsy, stops roaring, and backs away from the moopsy, whining with fear] "Moopsy!"
Narj: [nonchalantly] "Hmm?"
Narj: [suddenly terrified] "Oh no! The moopsy is free!"
Beckett Mariner: [mockingly] "Oh, no, your cuddliest prisoner is loose. Whatever shall we do?"
Narj: "You don't understand! Everything here is incredibly dangerous!"
Moopsy: [Moopsy climbs through an access panel into the Pyrithian Swamp Gobblers' cage] "Moopsy!"
Jack Ransom: "Can't be worse than the swamp gobblers."
Narj: "Of course it's worse! They only gobble you. The moopsy drinks your bones!"
Beckett Mariner: "How does something drink bones?"
Beckett Mariner: [Moopsy jumps on the back of a swamp gobbler, bites its neck, then sucks on it, causing the gobbler to collapse into a boneless mass of flesh] "Holy cow!"
Narj: "Run! Run for your lives!"
[Moopsy attacks other Pyrithian Swamp Gobbler, drinks all of its bones]
Jack Ransom, Beckett Mariner, Ensign Gary: [running from cage room, screaming]
Moopsy: [casually waddling out of the Pyrithian Swamp Gobblers' cage into the cage room] "Moopsy!"

(episode, "I Have No Bones Yet I Must Flee")
9. Ensign Olly is an accident-prone crewmember of the Cerritos. She had aspirations of being an engineer, but her service on previous Starfleet vessels scuttled those dreams. What is her secret, that ends up being the cause of the accidents that occur around her?

Answer: she is a demigod with lightning powers

Olly is the granddaughter of Zeus, one of the aliens of Pollux IV. She has a golden laurel around her head. It isn't a crown, but an actual part of her biology.

The Polluxians that she's decended from visited Earth and posed as gods to the people of Ancient Greece, using their telekinetic and electrical powers to awe the populace. They returned to Pollux IV when humans stopped believing in them seriously. This weakened their powers, for they survived on worship.

Eventually, they all ended their corporeal existence by spreading their essence out to the cosmos, not really dying. The last of these Polluxians was Apollo, who tried to force the crew of the USS Enterprise (under command of James Kirk) to worship him anew. He even began to seduce a female crewman -- Lt. Carolyn Palamas -- to be his queen. Fortunately, Kirk convinced her to reject Apollo. She began to address him as a scientific specimen, not as a seductive god. Heartbroken, he too spread his essence to the cosmos, slowly fading away until just the wind was left. ("Star Trek", episode "Who Mourns for Adonais?")

Olly inherited lightning powers from her grandfather, Zeus. But either because she wasn't trained in their use or because she was 3/4 mortal, she couldn't control them well. This caused her to affect electrical technology on the USS Reseda, such as an anti-grav sled, a turbolift, a replicator, and a phaser. She was transferred to the USS Cerritos, where she still continued to accidentally cause chaos with the equipment.

(episode, "Of Gods and Angles")
10. Lieutenant (j.g.) O'Connor, an engineering officer, has been training for years to ascend to a higher plane of existence. What is the secret to his attempts?

Answer: he is just faking it, to appear special

Lt. O'Connor was a operations officer on the Cerritos. He was attempting a spiritual ascension, practicing meditation techniques. On the evening that he was to make an attempt, eight of the crew -- including Tendi -- were invited to observe. However, she was distracted by his quarter's decorations, and caused a gong to fall and destroy a sand mandala he'd been working on for two years. He was understandably upset, and kicked Tendi out.

Feeling guilty, Tendi researched various ascension rituals, offering to help O'Connor regain his ascension level. He kept rebuffing her.

Then during shipwide crisis, the two of them become trapped together. O'Connor admitted that he was just faking his ascension attempts. He just wanted to stand out among a crew full of lower deck personel. After Tendi helped them escape, they realized that they liked each other, and they kissed. Then he began to glow and levitate; he was actually ascending. But instead of being a peaceful experience, it was painful to O'Connor. He disappeared after seeing a giant koala.

He later returned to our plane of existence in the final episode. He dropped out of a dimensional portal that opened in the Cerritos's Sick Bay. He was steaming, covered in muck, and shaking in fear.
