Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening scene takes place in Jakarta in 2003 with Ibu Ratna being brought in to analyze a situation. What is Ratna's position?

Answer: Professor of mycology

In the opening scene Ibu Ratna is eating lunch at a restaurant when two government men request that she come with them. She is brought to a medical facility to analyze a slide under a microscope and a dead body.
2. What does Ibu Ratna recommend that the government of Jakarta do after it is discovered there are 14 people missing from a grain factory where an infected person started biting co-workers?

Answer: Bomb the city

The outbreak of the Cordyceps fungal infection started at a grain factory in which a non-violent employee started biting people. This infected person got out of the grain factory and had not been caught by law enforcement. Three of the people that were bit had been taken in by police and killed when the infection took over. However, 14 other people were unaccounted for and presumed to be infected.

A government official pleads with Ibu Ratna to develop a vaccine for the Cordyceps that was present on the dead body that she viewed. Ratna tells him that she has worked with fungi for decades and there is no medicine or vaccine for it. Her recommendation is that the city of Jakarta and everyone in it be bombed to stop the spread.
3. When Ellie was under the care of the Fireflies in Boston, what type of test did they make her do daily to monitor her infection?

Answer: Count to ten and hold her arm out steady.

For most people that get bitten by an infected, their body totally breaks down within twenty-four hours. However, Ellie is unique in that her body did not get overtaken by the fungal infection even after being bitten three weeks ago. To monitor her infection, the leader of the Fireflies in Boston, Marlene, had Ellie count to ten and hold her arm out steady. Presumably, those that are developing a fungal infection after being bitten cannot count or hold their arm steady.
4. As she describes to Joel and Tess, in what boarded up locale popular with 14-year olds like her, did Ellie sneak into and get bitten?

Answer: Mall

Before they go out exploring further, Joel and Tess want to know more about Ellie. They ask Ellie how she got bit and she tells them that she snuck into a mall in the quarantine zone that had been boarded up. She thought the mall was empty but an infected was able to get to her and bite her arm. Luckily, her body did not succumb to the fungal infection.
5. To cross the city Joel, Tess and Ellie have to go through a flooded hotel. What information does Ellie share with Joel and Tess in the hotel?

Answer: She can't swim.

When Ellie enters the flooded hotel she is scared to proceed further because she can't swim. However, Joel jumps into the water and it is only a few feet deep so Ellie is able to walk through it normally. When Joel and Tess ask Ellie why she can't swim she tells them that there weren't swimming pools at the school she attended.
6. Ellie asks Joel several questions when they get to the top of the hotel. Joel tells Ellie that both he and Tess are from the Northeastern United States.

Answer: False

In the first episode of "The Last of Us" we learn that Joel is from Austin, Texas. Joel tells Ellie that he is from Texas and that Ellie is from Detroit which is located in the midwestern United States in the state of Michigan. When Ellie asks Joel why they are in Boston and if him and Tess are romantically involved, Joel answers "pass" to both questions.
7. In the Bostonian Museum, what are the severely deformed infected that make an eerie sound that Tess, Joel and Ellie come in contact with?

Answer: Clickers

Fans of the video game "The Last of Us" (2013) know all about the Clickers that are extremely powerful and make a nightmare inducing clicking sound. Using non-verbal cues, Joel tells Ellie that the Clickers can't see but have very good hearing. Joel is eventually able to subdue the Clickers but he has to use a lot of his ammunition.
8. Tragically, Tess is bitten and the infection quickly takes over. What does Tess do to try and buy time for Joel and Ellie to escape?

Answer: Blow up the building she is in.

While they are battling the Clickers, Tess gets bitten near her neck and the infection becomes visible. She shows Joel that Ellie had also been scratched by a Clicker but did not show any signs of the infection spreading. Tess convinces Joel that Ellie can be the cure to finding a vaccine for the fungal infection that has overtaken humanity. Knowing that other infected are heading toward them, Tess knocks over some gas tanks and uses her lighter to cause an explosive fire to take out as many of the infected as possible while Joel and Ellie run away.
9. Tess comes face to face with an infected. Through what part of Tess's body does an infected's fungal threads enter her?

Answer: Mouth

When Tess, Joel and Ellie get to the point where they are supposed to meet up with members of the Fireflies, they discover all of them dead or infected. Joel shoots one of the infected and this alerts the infected and they try to get into the building. Knowing that the infection will soon overtake her, Tess stays behind to blow up the building with her lighter. An infected comes face to face with her and its fungal threads enter Tess's mouth as she drops her lighter into the gas causing an explosion.

The interconnected and moving fungal threads seen in the show were not present in "The Last of Us" video game which had infectious spores in the air as part of the storyline.
10. What acclaimed creator of "The Last of Us" (2013) video game directed the season one episode "Infected" that premiered in 2023?

Answer: Neil Druckmann

Neil Druckmann was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1978 and his family moved to Miami, Florida in 1989. Druckmann started working for the video game company Naughty Dog in 2004 and he worked on popular game series like "Jak and Daxter" and "Uncharted". For the first two critically acclaimed games in "The Last of Us" series, Druckmann was credited as both director and writer. For the episode "Infected", the second episode of the first season of the tv series "The Last of Us", Druckmann was credited as director, executive producer and writer.
