Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While at an abandoned gas station, what does Joel show Ellie how to do?

Answer: Siphon gas

Joel explains to Ellie that gas only lasts a few hours because it has degraded over time. He tells Ellie that they have to search abandoned cars to see if they have any gas remaining that can be siphoned into a container and then put into Bill's truck. Joel siphons gas by sucking a tube creating pressure that transfers gas from one point to another.
2. Ellie reads to Joel from a book called "No Pun Intended Volume Too". What did the mermaid wear to her math class?

Answer: An algae bra

In "The Last of Us" video game from 2013 upon which season one of "The Last of Us" is based, Ellie reads Joel puns from the same "No Pun Intended Volume Too" book by Will Livingston. In the first joke of the episode, a mermaid wears an algae bra to math class. At first Joel groans at the jokes but eventually him and Ellie laugh at how silly they are.
3. The episode's title refers to lyrics from a song that Ellie and Joel listen to on a cassette tape. What musician that died at the age of 29 in 1953 sang the song "Alone and Forsaken" which includes the lyrics "Oh Lord, if you hear me, please hold to my hand"?

Answer: Hank Williams

Although Hank Williams recorded "Alone and Forsaken" in 1948-49, the song was not released until over two years after his death in 1955. The song is certainly apt for the desolate and depressing situation that Joel and Ellie are in trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. Comically, Ellie tells Joel that the song is from his time and he corrects her that it is from before his time.
4. Joel and Ellie stop in a wooded area to eat and sleep. Although it is 20 years old, what canned food do they both enjoy immensely for dinner?

Answer: Chef Boyardee Ravioli

Joel and Ellie heat up Chef Boyardee Ravioli and devour it for dinner. They both comment that it's amazing that it still tastes so good in spite of it being 20 year old. As Bill had said in the prior episode, "when you're starving, everything tastes good".

The Chef Boyardee brand of canned pastas were created by Ettore Boiardi in 1928.
5. Who are Joel and Ellie traveling to find in Cody, WY, a 35 hour drive from Boston, MA?

Answer: Joel's brother, Tommy

Joel explains to Ellie that his brother Tommy has always been a dreamer. His aspirations and hopefulness led him to join the US Army and serve in Desert Storm at a young age and then join the Fireflies after the fungal outbreak in 2003. Tommy eventually had a falling out with the Fireflies in Boston that were led by Marlene and he ended up living out in Wyoming.

He would typically communicate with Joel by radio but Joel had been unable to reach Tommy for some time prompting him to drive out west to search for him.
6. In what former city's ruins are Joel and Ellie forced to take a detour off the highway after which they get ambushed?

Answer: Kansas City, MO

Joel and Ellie are trying to drive westward to the Cody, WY area where Tommy was last heard from. While on the highway driving through the ruins of Kansas City, MO they cannot continue because there are cars and trucks blocking the lanes leading under a bridge. Joel believes that he will be able to get off on an exit and get back on the highway but he ends up running into a trap.
7. What ploy does a man use to try to trick Joel and Ellie into trying to help him?

Answer: He acts as if he has a leg injury.

When Joel and Ellie get lost after exiting the highway in Kansas City, they come across a man that is limping and screaming to them for help. Ellie wants to help the man but Joel knows that it is a trap and if they stop they will be captured. Joel speeds up to get past the man but he ends up crashing into a laundromat and a gunfight ensues.
8. After Ellie and Joel crash their truck, Joel takes out two men in a gunfight. How is the third man, Bryan, immobilized?

Answer: Ellie shoots him in the back.

Joel has Ellie crawl into a hole in a wall to hide while he engages the men in a gunfight. After he takes out the first two he tries to regroup but he is attacked by a man named Bryan. Bryan pins his gun to Joel's neck and starts choking him. Knowing that Joel is in danger, Ellie shoots Bryan in the back.

Although the shot doesn't kill Bryan, it immobilizes him and Joel tells Ellie that he will finish it from there.
9. Once the search party looking for them has passed, Joel shows Ellie an important facet of using a gun. What does Joel teach Ellie?

Answer: How to grip a handgun.

Joel tells Ellie that he let his guard down and he's sorry that she had to shoot Bryan. Surprisingly, Ellie tells Joel that it wasn't the first time she'd used a gun. She shows Joel how her FEDRA military school had taught her to grip a gun and Joel shows her his method in which both thumbs overlap providing a tighter grip.
10. What is the name of the ruthless leader of the vigilantes that have overtaken the Quarantine Zone where Joel and Ellie are hiding?

Answer: Kathleen

Kathleen is the leader of a group that overtook the government run FEDRA Kansas City Quarantine Zone. Thinking that Joel and Ellie are working for a man named Henry whose actions she thinks killed her brother, Kathleen sends dozens of people to search.

The episode ends with Joel and Ellie evading Kathleen's search party but they end up being held at gunpoint by a man and a young boy near the top of a building.
