"The Last of Us" S1:E9 "Look for the Light" Quiz

Answer: Anna cut the umbilical cord attached to Ellie before she was bit.

Somehow the Infected pursuing Anna is able to track her to a room that she is hiding out in. The Infected and Anna fight each other and Anna is eventually able to stab the Infected in the head but she is bit in the process. Once Anna regains her senses from fighting off the Infected, she realizes that she has given birth. Anna knows that she has been bit and cuts off the umbilical cord attached to her baby. Shortly after, Marlene and a few men arrive and Anna lies to them saying that she cut off the umbilical cord before she was bit. Anna tells Marlene the baby's name is 'Ellie' and at Anna's request, Marlene ends Anna's life before the Cordyceps infection can take over.

The actress that plays the part of Anna in the season one finale, Ashley Johnson, had previously provided the voice and motion capture of Ellie in the video games "The Last of Us" (2013) and "The Last of Us Part II" (2020).

Answer: Boggle

After the devastating opening scene showing Ellie's tragic birth, we are taken back to the present with Ellie and Joel scrounging for supplies. Joel finds a can of Chef Boyardee and the word game Boggle. Ellie loves word games so she happily takes Boggle from Joel and puts it in her backpack. Boggle was introduced in the 1970s and it is played by creating words of at least three letters in length. Players form words by using letters on adjacent cubes and the scoring system grants more points for longer words with words of 8+ letters scoring 11 points.

Answer: Playing guitar

Seemingly knowing that they are near the end of their journey, Joel asks Ellie if she'd like him to teach her how to play the guitar. Ellie agrees that it'd be nice to learn guitar but they have an awkward silence knowing that the future is uncertain.

In the video game of the same name that inspired the tv series, Ellie plays the guitar at several times in some nice change of pace scenes.

Answer: Giraffe

Similar to "The Last of Us" (2013) video game, Ellie and Joel see and feed a majestic giraffe in the season finale. Ellie is amazed at how gentle and tall the giraffe is. Ellie feeds the giraffe with leaves from a tree and is sad when the giraffe walks away. Ellie and Joel end up getting a great view of a tower of about 10 giraffes from their overlook.

Answer: She doesn't have to go inside the hospital if she doesn't want to.

Interestingly, it is Joel who gets cold feet when they are outside of the hospital. Joel tells Ellie that she doesn't have to go into the hospital and that they can just forge their own path. Ellie wants to continue to the hospital saying that they need to finish what they started.

Answer: A failed suicide attempt

Shortly after Outbreak Day in 2003, Joel's daughter, Sarah, is killed after a soldier of the U.S. Army is ordered to kill Joel and Sarah. Joel survives but understandably after losing his daughter he finds life difficult to cope. Joel tells Ellie that he tried to shoot himself but he flinched and ended up just grazing his face with the bullet and leaving a scar. Prior to the season finale, Joel had just told Ellie that he had been shot.

Answer: There's no tomorrow

Ellie recites that "People are making apocalypse jokes like there's no tomorrow" and Joel chuckles because of how funny and bad the joke is. Another punny one-liner that Ellie reads to Joel is "Moon rocks taste better than Earth rocks because they're meteor."

Answer: Smoke bomb

As Ellie reads Joel a third pun, a smoke bomb is detonated close to them and they are quickly immobilized and taken by the Fireflies. When they wake up, both Joel and Ellie are in the hospital.

Answer: They will have to remove parts of Ellie's brain.

Joel tells Marlene that Cordyceps grows in the brain and that the procedure the doctors are looking to do would involve taking out parts of Ellie's brain which would presumably kill her. Marlene counters that the doctor believes that Ellie has had the Cordyceps since birth and that after it is removed it could be allowed to multiply and a cure could be developed to dispense to humanity. Marlene pleads to Joel to let the surgery happen because Ellie would have agreed to it and Ellie is the only person they know of that is immune to the Cordyceps fungal infection.

Answer: Her best friend Riley

Joel violently eliminates most of the group of individuals (Fireflies) at the hospital and rescues Ellie before they perform surgery on her. As they are driving away, Ellie tells Joel that the first person she had to kill was her best friend Riley. Two episodes prior, Riley is shown getting bit while she was hanging out with Ellie at the mall. Joel then lies to Ellie telling her that there are dozens more that are immune to Cordyceps like her and the doctors couldn't create a cure.
