The second season begins with a scene from the first season in which Joel lies to Ellie about the Fireflies. He lies by telling her that the scientists were not successful in creating a cure after they operated on her body which is immune from the cordyceps fungus. He also leaves out the part about him murdering the individuals at the facility where Ellie was going to be operated on.

The individuals that Joel murdered in season one were part of a group called the Fireflies. Abby and her four friends are mourning the deaths of those killed by Joel just outside the facility where the carnage took place. After Abby puts a Firefly necklace on a cross over of her dad's buried body, she tells her friends that she is going to kill Joel slowly.

Answer: Circuit breakers

Dina tells Joel that the main lines have cracks and exposed roots and that the foreman (Joel) is doing other things. Joel informs Dina that he is working to repair circuit breakers. Dina wants to learn how the circuit breaker works and Joel shows her the bimetallic strip and springs which are important components that needed fixing.

While they are conversing, Dina tries to have Joel open up about why he and Ellie don't seem as close as they used to be.

Answer: Sniper rifle

Tommy and Ellie are atop a snowcapped mountain taking out distant infected. Tommy teaches Ellie that she has to compensate for the distance and wind when using a sniper rifle. If possible, a head shot is ideal to immediately take out the infected which Ellie is able to do on her first shot but her second shot hits an infected in the chest.

Answer: Turn outsiders away when they arrive

Joel goes over with Maria the timeline for when certain construction projects should be completed. Maria counters that construction needs to go faster and Joel jokes that he'll turn the dial on the Construct-o-Meter. Joel believes that Maria and her counsel are letting too many people in and there is not enough space to house everyone. Maria is Joel's sister-in-law and she has a son with her husband Tommy (Joel's brother).

Answer: Marijuana

Joel gives Gail a bag of marijuana and we learn that it is Gail's birthday. Gail explains that it is her first birthday in 41 years without her husband Eugene being around. Joel informs Gail that the marijuana that he obtained for her is not great because it is winter. Gail explains that her deceased husband, Eugene, could find buds the size of pine cones even in winter to make marijuana.

It is discovered that Joel actually killed Eugene. Gail acknowledges that Joel had no choice but she still hates him for it.

Answer: He saved her.

Joel believes that Ellie hates him because he saved her life. In season one, Ellie was going to have her brain operated on to try and find a cure for the cordyceps fungus that is killing humanity. Scientists believed that studying Ellie's brain may help them find the cure since she is immune. The operation would have killed her and Joel took matters into his own hands by killing everyone at the hospital where Ellie was.

The scene where Joel talks with Gail occurs five years after Joel saved Ellie. Sadly, Joel and Ellie are almost estranged from each other because Ellie cannot forgive Joel for not allowing the scientists to study her brain. Joel knows this is the reason but he believes that saving her was his only course of action as the alternative would've been to let Ellie die.

Answer: It takes cover and stalks her.

While on the Alpine Run patrol, Ellie and Dina clear the upper floor of a building of two infected 'clickers'. After this Ellie falls through the rotted floor to the lower level. The infected that she encounters on the lower level is different than any infected she had encountered before.

This infected stalks her by walking quietly on all fours and it hides from Ellie with the intention to ambush her later. When Ellie returns to her community she tells the counsel that this infected was smart and didn't mindlessly run straight at her.

Answer: Guitar

The conversation between Joel and Ellie is awkward and seemingly forced. Ellie doesn't really confirm whether she is going to the 2029 New Years Party. Trying to make small talk, Joel asks Ellie if she has been playing her guitar. Ellie tells Joel "not much" and he notices that some of the strings need to be replaced.

Answer: They kiss.

Earlier in the episode Dina informs Ellie that she is no longer with her boyfriend Jesse. At the New Years Party Dina and Ellie dance together and Dina tells Ellie that all of the guys should be jealous of Ellie. While Dina and Ellie kiss, Seth tells them to stop and that it is a family affair. Dina tells him sorry but Seth persists and calls them a homophobic slur. Joel knocks down Seth to protect Ellie but this just angers Ellie further. Joel is trying to protect her but Ellie feels that she can protect herself.

Answer: Lights coming from Ellie and Joel's community

It has been five years since Abby vowed to find and kill Joel. At the end of the episode Abby and her group are trudging through the snow and in the distance they can see the lights from Joel's community. Additionally, at the end of the episode it is shown that the cordyceps tendrils have entered the pipes of the Jackson, Wyoming community where Joel and Ellie are located.
